Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Animal Research and Care Specialist to manage a newly operational Animal Research Facility in a growing biotechnology company. This position requires the ability to manage and perform daily facility operations and husbandry as well conduct experimental procedures and studies. The candidate will be required to conduct all aspects of animal research facility operations, train research staff in facility procedures and monitor compliance and endpoints. Successful candidates must have an experience with ABSL-2 animal research operations as well as rodent disease models and research procedures. As the animal program expands, supervision and training of husbandry support staff as well as procedural training of scientific staff will be required. Candidates must be able to excel in a fast-paced environment, be highly collaborative, self-motivated and flexible.
Responsibilities
Animal husbandry- daily checks, cage changing and routine husbandry duties.
Facility management- establish and implement procedures for facility operations and recordkeeping for ordering and maintaining supplies, equipment and animals.
Supervise in future, schedule and train husbandry support staff.
Establish and maintain surveillance program.
Provide assistance to IACUC in post-approval monitoring program.
Experimental procedures-conduct experimental procedures on mice and rats including agent administration by PO, IV, SQ, ID, IN and IM. Blood sample collection via tail, retro-orbital, submandibular or saphenous veins.
Provide procedural training to new ARF or scientific staff.
Environmental Health and Safety-develop and implement procedures for ABSL-2 containment, hazardous and infectious waste removal, and safe laboratory practices.
Some weekend work required.
Education/Experience
BA/ BS in Animal Science or related field with 4+ years experience in animal research and facility management.
LATG Certification or equivalent, CMAR certification a plus.
Experience with disease models or infection models under ABSL-2 precautions.
Competencies
Proficiency with rodent experimental procedures.
Highly organized, detail oriented.
Excellent communication skills.
Ability to multi-task.
