JOB POSITION: Application Development Manager
JOB LOCATION: Saint Paul, MN
JOB SUMMARY:
1. Set clear performance goals that are linked to business strategy and manage for results.
2. Sustain a pipeline of top talent, develop and enhance skill sets of employees, and retain key talent
3. Manage within forecasted budgets and financial objectives for projects, employees, and overhead.
4. Encourage and support the International Development model while adhering to quality and performance standards.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
* (80%) Lead Software Development Teamo Manages activities of product development staff.
o Leads, recruits, trains, and develops the development staff and functions within assigned area of responsibility, to support a highly functional, self-directed work team.
o Ensures that direct reports receive appropriate training.
o Assists developers and other staff with approach and technical issues.
o Evaluates progress and results regarding team activities and goal attainment within area of responsibilities.
o Mentors, guides, and coaches direct reports to insure department's operational performance and leadership, and to expand their capabilities.
o Present ideas and information to others through written or oral manner clearly, consistently, and concisely.
o Listen actively and exercise sensitivity when interacting with others.
o Assure that employees consistently receive appropriate information in order for them to perform their work effectively.
o Scopes and manages complex development projects.
o Assumes role of project manager or delegates as situation dictates.
o Utilize sound planning, resource management and budgeting techniques.
o Maintain and use appropriate records on projects, personnel, costs, schedules and equipment.
o Provide timely input and feedback to management.
o Provides key input into overall Development strategic plan.
o Provide proactive direction to key team members on a timely basis.
o Establish and communicate individual and group performance objectives.
o Identify appropriate activities and strategies for achieving long- and short-range objectives.
o Works with other functional areas to optimize development standards.
o Manage to the software development lifecycle
o Inspection of software development techniques in use for analysis, design, development, testing and documentation
o Accountability for the overall technical integrity of assigned product(s) including design effectiveness, performance management and programming efficiency.
o Exposure to and understanding of key business processes associate with assigned product (s)
o Applies industry knowledge to the development process.
o Appropriate level of product knowledge to provide direction and decision making support for design and development decisions.
o Increase overall quality by ensuring that documented requirements are fully understood and products and services are designed to meet those requirements.
o Actively participate in the evolution and reengineering of the development processes.
o Inspect all aspects of the lifecycle to insure that appropriate processes are in place to insure quality throughout development.
o Inspect project progress with respect to quality throughout the development lifecycle.
o Inspect product repair effectiveness for assigned product(s).
o Creates enthusiasm and energy towards functional goals through the use of inspiration, inclusion, urgency, and optimism.
* (20%) Manage product and client issues/expectations/activities
o Moves through the change cycle, and motivates and leads staff through the change cycle while maintaining a high level of productivity.
o Provides timely and effective communication with the other functional organizations related to development plans, issues, changes, and so on.
o Develops cross-functional relationships to address issues including product quality, delivery methods, and client satisfaction.
o Monitor progress toward objectives and adjust plans as necessary to reach objectives.
o Take action as appropriate in a timely manner based on objective data, keeping management informed.
o Resolves issues and roadblocks or escalates to proper owner as needed.
o Inform management of relevant problems, issues, or changes in a timely and consistent manner.
o Meets or exceeds internal and external customer expectations on functionality, timelines, and reliability; maintains high standards of ethics and performance; establishes and manages quality improvement processes towards project goals; empowers staff to do the “right†thing “right.â€
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
* Bachelor's degree in business, software engineering or computer science or related education experience.
* 5 years technical experience in software development
* 1 year project management experience
* 2 years previous management experience or project lead experience
* Familiar with client/server application development and Case tools
* Proven experience in managing software product development projects
* In-depth knowledge of software development design process
* Excellent communication (oral and written) skills and the ability to interact effectively with staff, peers, internal/external clients and prospective clients
PREFERRED SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
* Advanced degree
* Direct experience with assigned product(s) either as a practitioner or vendor.
