Description / Purpose:The Application Scientist represents the interface between the research lab and the customer. The primary area of responsibility will be the MGTTM business, Mascoma?s advanced yeast for the ethanol industry. Coordinating closely with the R&D team, the Applications Scientist is responsible for effective scale-up, technical transfer, introduction/launch, and optimization of MGT products in a customer-specific context. This is a technical position, which will require technical knowledge of the MGT product line, knowledge of industrial fermentation processes including yeast and enzymes used in the ethanol industry, effective teamwork skills, and effectiveness at prioritizing activities according to business and customer needs.
This position will report to the MGT Technical Director at Mascoma Corporation and will be based in Lebanon, New Hampshire, with an estimated 50% travel to the MGT customer base, primarily in the Midwestern US.
Key Responsibilities:
The selected individual will exhibit a solid technical background in the ethanol industry. The ideal candidate will have specific experience with ethanol fermentation, application of yeast, application of industrial enzymes, and specific knowledge of the ethanol industry customer base.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability to manage projects, create written summaries and presentations to upper management, develop trust and credibility with customers, and work as part of a winning team. Specific responsibilities may include:

Working with the R&D group to develop effective application testing protocols and experiments to maximize the value of the product.

Being part of an integrated account team working with sales and marketing colleagues, commercial partners, and management to set and meet sales goals.

Communicating and negotiating directly with customers to arrange and execute plant trials according to a written demonstration plan.

Troubleshooting and responding to customer needs and questions during plant trials and on an ongoing basis.

Preparing technical presentations and summary reports for customers.

Preparing business summaries and presentations for upper management.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor?s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biology; other disciplines considered depending on specific experience.
Two or more years of relevant industrial experience. Relevant experience must be outside of a university setting and could include working in the industrial yeast industry, industrial enzyme industry, and/or the ethanol/biofuels industry.
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, and work with colleagues to create and deliver upon measurable business outcomes.
Successful candidates will have strong skills in communication, planning, and documentation, as well as adaptability to a dynamic work environment.
Ability to travel approximately 50% on average.
Preferred:
Advanced degree (MBA and/or technical).
Specific experience and knowledge of customers and operations in the existing corn-based ethanol industry
Proven history of accomplishments, including as a member of cross-functional project teams.
