Headquartered in Davis, CA and venture capital-backed, Marrone Bio Innovations (MBI), discovers, develops, and markets effective and environmentally responsible natural products for pest management in agriculture and water.
We are looking for an Associate Research Scientist at Marrone Bio Innovations, Inc. to join our energetic team in our Davis laboratory. The major role of the Associate Research Scientist will be to insure the company has the in-house capability to conduct reliable and timely bioassays against a range of important insects, to rapidly move candidates from discovery to development and to the market.
Responsibilities and Duties
Design and implement plant-based and diet bioassays for testing new microbial broths and plant extracts, against a wide range of economically important insects (of several insect orders).
Establish connections with university, extension, and private cooperators to enhance in-house testing capability and our network of potential collaborators.
Oversee the ongoing discovery screening for testing microbial extracts against a range of insects every week.
Oversee maintenance of insect colonies and insure there are always high quality insects available for testing.
Collect, summarize, analyze, and present results.
Maintain data in an organized, systematic manner on the company database.
Supervise assistant scientists, technicians and student interns.
Attend professional meetings and make presentations.
Keep abreast of new technologies and research in the area of microbial and plant-extracted insecticides and bioassays; bring forward new ideas to colleagues and management.
Qualifications and Characteristics
A strong background in general entomology, statistics, insecticide bioassay and insect rearing in a dynamic industrial setting is preferred. An MS in Entomology or related field with 3+ years of work experience required. Experience managing others, insect rearing, designing, conducting and evaluating insect bioassays for lab, greenhouse and field trials is desired.
Additional needed abilities and skills include:
Well-established computer skills required; good report writing and data management skills.
Ability to multi-task, handle a high volume of tasks, work well under pressure and with short deadlines.
Ability to work in a team environment; good written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
A passion for sustainable agriculture and biological pest management solutions.
Thrive in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, agile, and dynamic work setting.
Deliver results on time and efficiently.
Essential Physical & Mental Functions
Mechanical aptitude with ability to lift 50 lbs.
Be able to work on repetitive tasks in a multi-functional lab.
Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time (2-4 hours).
