As a professional individual, the classroom assistant teacher works closely with the lead teacher to provide and maintain a positive and appropriate educational program that meets the social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs of the children within their care.
Essential Duties: Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
I. Program Quality
Assists in the provision of high quality programming and care within their assigned classroom(s).
Maintains constant supervision of classroom children at all times.
Interacts with the children and encourages their involvement in classroom experiences.
Assists in the provision and maintenance of a safe, caring and welcoming classroom that is kept orderly, clean and appealing.
Works in conjunction with the classroom lead teacher to ensure adequate classroom supplies, equipment and resources are available.
Maintains daily, open communication with families.
Understands and is mindful of how personal appearances, dress, use of body language and voice tone impact the environment, and how children and families engage.
Assists the lead teacher in planning, implementing and evaluating the educational environment and programming of their assigned classroom(s) including but not limited to:
Becoming familiar with and utilizing the company-standardized curriculum and curricular resources.
Supporting the completion of classroom planning documents.
Preparing the environment and materials in accordance with Weekly Planning Forms.
Implementing age-, developmentally- and culturally-appropriate classroom activities and experiences for the children.
Assisting in the completion of informal child and classroom assessments and progress reports, per required timeframes.
Providing individualized programming and differentiated instruction necessary for the success of the children within their care.
Actively participates in and maintains the classroom ?Response to Intervention? (RIT) process. Brightside Academy?s RIT process works to ensure successful outcomes for all children and families who experience our programs. This includes, but is not limited to:
Respecting and following the established RIT process, including intervention planning and implementation, and child and classroom assessment.
Assisting the lead teacher in the establishment and maintenance of a classroom-based, age-, developmentally- and culturally-appropriate positive behavioral support system.
Being sensitive to individual children?s differences and needs, and willing to adjust the program, curriculum and/or environment to meet those needs.
Actively participates in Brightside Academy as well as field-based professional development opportunities. It is required for classroom assistant teachers to obtain a minimum of 24-professional development hours (or eight college credits) a year.
The assistant teacher is to assume the lead teacher?s role upon his/her absence. Therefore, it is imperative that they frequently lead selected activities during designated parts of the classroom day for training purposes.
Adheres to all company policies and procedures.
Actively attends and participates in all academy staff meetings.
Is willing to work in a team environment, share ideas and be open to others; compromise and be flexible.
The classroom assistant teacher is expected to be on time to work every day and to follow the company dress code. Assistant teachers always use appropriate language and treat everyone with respect, exhibiting a genuine positive attitude towards all children, families and academy colleagues.
The classroom assistant teacher performs additional program duties as assigned by the academy director and/or the academy education manager and/or the managing lead teacher.
All other duties as assigned.
The primary focus of the assistant teacher is to support the provision of high quality programming within their assigned classroom. High quality classroom programming must include a triangulated framework of family-centered practices; developmentally, individually and culturally appropriate practices and intentional teaching; and program support. The classroom assistant teacher must be a professional committed to ?best practices,? always striving for excellence and successful child outcomes. An effective classroom assistant teacher must have the following education, experience and abilities:
Minimum of a high school diploma/GED with six training hours completed in early education. Preferably, the assistant teacher will have a current child development associate (CDA) credential.
Minimum of six months documented positive early educational teaching experience.
Certified in first aid, CPR and mandated reporting.
Current and approved tuberculosis test results. (Test not required in Ohio)
Ability to pass a thorough criminal background check and drug screening.
Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written.
Ability to use technology such as iPads, and other educational resources.
Ability to effectively read, write and communicate the English language. Bilingualism is a plus.
Has the physical capability to:
Frequently lift or move weight as in lifting, carrying or holding children up to 60 lbs
Repetitively bend, stretch and stoop
Work with children on the floor
Work outdoors in a variety of weather
Fully maintain sight and sound child supervision
Perform light cleaning duties
Classroom assistant teachers must be enthusiastic and energetic as well as nurturing and patient. They must be trustworthy, respect confidentiality, and be culturally aware and sensitive. Lastly, an effective classroom assistant teacher must be a good ?team player? and have the ability to work well with others.
