At Synthetic Genomics, Inc., we are dedicated to using advanced biology to developing biological solutions for several of the world?s largest industries including food, energy, and water. As pioneers in the science of synthetic genomics, we are applying the latest technologies to make more sustainable products and processes. We are currently seeking a Bio-Technician to join our fast-growing, dynamic and collaborative team in Calipatria, CA.
Under supervision, assists the scientific and facility staff with routine laboratory tasks and large scale facilities functions. The position will involve working closely with Senior Research Associates and operations staff to assure that operational tasks are completed as required. An individual with cell culturing, laboratory, and large scale open pond technology experience is an ideal fit. Attention to detail is a critical requirement.
Required Skills
Collaborate with scientists, facilities, and engineers to implement, and operate large culture systems at various scales located within SGI's large scale facility in the Imperial Valley
Perform sampling of algae culture systems
Perform routine and experimental physiological and biochemical measurements
Clean and maintain culture vessels and large scale open ponds as well as photobioreactors
Maintain facility and laboratory equipment as needed
Maintain lab glassware as needed to wash/sterilize and disinfect. This process will include use of the autoclave
Media preparation
Follow and Document Standard Operating Procedures (SOP?s) and additional verbal and written directions
Must be able to follow experimental protocols for complex engineering experiments focused on the optimization of production and harvesting
Monitor and process biohazard materials disposal
Monitor and maintain inventory levels for lab stock room
Maintain a culture of safety in the facilities
Must be detail oriented
Must be a team-player who works well in a team oriented environment
Must be able to work a schedule which includes weekends
Must be able to work overtime
Performs other duties as assigned
Required Experience
Basic familiarity with lab equipment and machinery
Ability to read, write and follow written and verbal instruction
Proficient in English
Firm understanding of Excel and other Microsoft Office Products
Must be able to pass basic Math and Science proficiency test
Basic knowledge of lab safety protocols and handling of biohazardous materials
Must be able to bend, stoop, reach high and low, work at a constant pace and be capable of lifting and carrying 50 lbs
High School diploma with minimum 6 months to 1 year of relevant laboratory skills required or equivalent education, experience and training or currently enrolled in a biology program.
