Gevo, Inc. is an exciting, team-oriented company that is pioneering the advanced green energy industry. We are looking
for a Biocatalyst Development - R&D Leader, based in Englewood, Colorado. The Biocatalyst Development - R&D
Leader will lead a yeast development team with the goal of delivering improved fermentation biocatalysts for commercial
production of target chemicals. This position will lead multidisciplinary teams of microbiologists, molecular biologists,
protein engineers, chemists, engineers, and fermentation development scientists to improve the performance of yeast
used in production fermentation facilities.
Requirements include:
? Masters Degree or PhD in Microbial engineering, Chemical engineering, Microbiology or equivalent;
? 10-15 years of technical success in developing and commercializing fermentation biocatalysts;
? 10-15 years of experience with multiple fermentation configurations (two or more of the following: batch, fed-batch,
continuous, aerobic, and anaerobic);
? 10-15 years of experience developing low cost, synthetic or minimal medias for multiple fermentation microorganisms;
? Demonstrated successful production of primary metabolites using metabolically engineered microorganisms, including
yeasts and bacteria;
? 10-15 years of experience in metabolic engineering of strains, providing quantitative performance data and improved
host & modified strains for further engineering;
? Experience leading the optimization and commercial implementation of new strains;
? Ability to trouble-shoot fermentation problems based on experience and broad overall background in chemical
sciences (e.g. biology, chemistry, analytical chemistry, process engineering);
? Ability to analyze and interpret fermentation data, as well as identify critical issues, and provide direction for strain
development and metabolic engineering efforts;
? Experience leading a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers;
? Experience with project leadership and setting milestones; experience holding self and others accountable for
delivering;
? Excellent verbal and written communications skills; effective listening skills; ability to communicate well with scientists
having different academic backgrounds;
? Ability to solve problems using input from scientists within the different teams at Gevo (e.g. metabolic engineering,
strain development, process engineering);
? Ability to work as a team player in order to accomplish larger objectives;
? Can receive and give critical performance feedback in a constructive manner.
Responsibilities include:
? Build a collaborative, flexible, and successful team to develop, characterize, and implement new fermentation strains;
? Provide expertise and strategy to improve host microorganisms and engineered microorganisms in order to improve
performance to reach economic targets;
? Provide leadership for the development of industrial mediums and fermentation systems for piloting and commercial
operations;
? Oversee fermentation development using metabolically engineered organisms ensuring experimental design and
material balances are quantitative and meet the needs of developing commercially relevant microorganisms;
? Integration of theoretical and practical aspects of fermentation technology into metabolic engineering research.
