Biologist - Strain Development Coskata
FLSA Status: Exempt
The Strain Development group works to identify improved fermentation conditions and isolate cultures for improved production of microbial fermentation products. The purpose of this job is to work closely with other members of Strain Development, New Product Development, and Engineering and Operations groups to support corporate goals for enhancing innovation and improving productivity.
Conduct bioreactor (2L to 5L) fermentation projects, including experimental set-up, reactor operation, equipment maintenance, sampling, data analysis and report writing.
Collaborate with other members of R&D to evaluate impact of experimental findings on strain improvement efforts
Conduct bioreactor, serum bottle and microliter fermentations for the generation mutant libraries, evaluation of production candidates and nutrient optimization studies
Aseptic handling of anaerobic microbial cultures
Operation of lab instrumentation (including Sartorius bioreactors, robotics systems and analytical chromatography equipment)
Preparation of reagents and culture media with precision and common microbial lab duties
Use of analytical instrumentation including pH meters, spectrophotometers, gas chromatographs, HPLCs, microscopes and anaerobic enzyme assays
To perform the essential functions of this position successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
A Bachelor or Masters degree in biology, biochemistry or chemistry with 2-5 years of industrial experience with fermentation process monitoring and control instrumentation
Applicant should have at least two years of lab experience handling microbial cultures with good aseptic technique and some familiarity with anaerobic microbial techniques.
Applicant must possess the ability to learn new skills/technologies quickly and to use automation under instruction
Good observational and organizational skills, basic knowledge of biological safety, training in common lab (both microbiology and molecular biology) techniques, ability to work with Microsoft
Office products, ability to record and organize experimental data and a basic understanding of statistics are also desired skills
Applicant will work in close proximity to several potent chemical and environmental hazards (including syngas); the ability to closely follow safety protocols is a necessity
Knowledge and experience with anaerobic syngas fermentation methods and experimental design for strain improvement and novel microorganism discoveries
Candidate should have proven proficiency in all anaerobic and aseptic techniques
Other information: Hours worked are generally normal 5-day work weeks, but some weekend work will be necessary
This position is largely self-directed and requires understanding of company policy, procedures, and values. Team members will be required to adhere to all safety requirements in all work environments. This position operates in an office environment, as well as laboratory environment. In the laboratory environment, the team member may be exposed to chemical hazards including syngas, moving mechanical parts and common laboratory hazards such as sharps and pressurized fermentation vessels.
