The Business Systems Process Engineer is responsible for assessing and documenting recommended changes to utility industry business processes or systems to support smart grid solutions, including the implementation, training, support and maintenance processes for the integration and deployment of Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) data collection systems. This position reports to the Project Manager associated with specific contracted utility customer engagements and will work jointly with the customers business process lead. Effective communication skills, flexibility, a strong teamwork approach and the desire to work in a fast-paced environment are necessary for success. A bachelors degree in a technical discipline is required; masters degree is preferred.
Duties
Facilitate and/or participates in business process review sessions with the customers business process lead, Smart Grid / AMI solution Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and customer business operations SMEs to identify business requirements. Capture meeting minutes and action items from such meetings.
Create business requirements specifications, business process flow diagrams, and associated blueprint documentation required to implement the approved business requirements for the Smart Grid / AMI solution.
Conduct gap analysis between business processes and Smart Grid / AMI solution functionality to identify process and/or solution changes required to meet approved business requirements; including the review and assessment of any existing customer process and blueprint documentation.
As part of gap analysis, include all associated business processes and procedures that will be affected by the implementation of the Smart Grid / AMI solution, including inventory management, receiving, meter shop processes, meter staging and field deployment, RMA processes, service location assignment, billing route / group management, billing data collection and reporting, downstream data sharing to customer information systems, billing systems, accounting systems and field support / troubleshooting processes.
Leverage solution SMEs and customers third-party business solutions providers to properly assess the technological and functional impacts and limitations of any recommended changes, including alternative approaches.
Develop or modify daily work procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to incorporate processes changes needed to support the Smart Grid / AMI solution implementation, including a description of the work to be performed, procedural steps and workflow diagrams outlining the required work, responsibilities for who performs the work, and any tracking or reporting metrics to be gathered as part of work efficiency management.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or Information Systems Management is required.
5 to 7 years of business systems analysis or business process engineering experience is required.
Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Visio, MS Project, and MS Power Point is required.
Extensive travel to or co-location at the customer site is required. Travel to business partner and third-party solution providers as needed.
Highly Desired Qualifications
Master's degree
Experience in the commercial utility, utility metering, SmartMeter, AMR/AMI or Smart Grid industries
Direct experience in business process engineering associated with Smart Grid / AMI solutions
Knowledge of cellular network communication technologies, electric metering technologies, data collection systems, customer information systems, accounting systems and Meter Data Management systems
Project Management experience in Smart Grid / AMI solution implementations.
