Chemical Engineer (Engineer II) TerraTherm
This position reports to the engineering manager and is responsible for chemical engineering and related activities associated with TerraTherm projects, including: developing material and energy balance calculations, process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), specification and selection of effluent treatment equipment, Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) reviews, and costing of such materials and equipment. Advise and assist project staff with field deployment and troubleshooting of effluent treatment equipment, as well as technical evaluation of field data. Prepare or assist with preparation of relevant sections of technical proposals, work plans, design documents, permit applications and other required submittals. This position may also involve task management and field oversight activities as needed. This is primarily an office position with occasional field travel required.
Prepare designs and work plans, from conceptual design through detailed design packages. Primary focus is on the chemical engineering aspect; however, expect involvement in other aspects of the design process. Chemical engineering design tasks may include developing material and energy balance calculations, PFDs and P&IDs, evaluation of materials of construction, estimate of utility requirements and consumption, etc. to form the basis of design for effluent treatment systems. Other typical design aspects may include preparation of wellfield layout, mechanical equipment and piping layout, and preparation of relevant construction or connection details.
Develop or assist with development of process control strategy and approach. Develop control logic and/or control system functional requirements for use by control system programmers.
Specify effluent treatment equipment, with a preference toward existing TerraTherm equipment inventory. Incorporate existing equipment inventory and develop component and system specifications, develop equipment schedules and material takeoffs, and prepare requests for bid for subcontractors and material vendors. Solicit and evaluate vendor quotations. Interface with vendors and suppliers as needed.
Prepare or assist with preparation of air permit applications. Interface with project manager and/or permitting authorities as required during application process.
Assist with instrumentation and control system design. Develop and/or modify PLC configuration programs, ladder logic diagrams, develop specifications and/or QC subcontractor-prepared PLC programs.
Perform site visits on new project opportunities to collect information regarding construction permits, evaluate potential site support contractors, and assist with preparation of cost estimates, and identify utility/facility constraints.
Evaluate company-owned chemical process equipment.
Support chemical engineering design aspects of company research and development projects.
Work cross-functionally to identify and document best practices and process initiatives.
Field Engineering As Needed
Perform the function of field engineer, assistant project manager or assistant construction manager (as required), including hands on field work and/or field engineering, supervision of subcontractors, review of daily work production reports, schedule and budget. Inspect work of company staff and subcontractors. Communicate issues with project manager or construction manager and client as directed by the project manager.
Verify that daily production reports are maintained,
Perform field QA/QC to ensure construction work is performed in accordance with design specification,
Prepare detail drawings and perform fabrication supervision,
Keep project manager and client on informed on design and performance issues.
Communicate and coordinate work quality or safety concerns to the TerraTherm project manager, VP of Operations, Engineering Manager, and Technical Director as necessary to ensure proper and safe completion of the project
Assist the TerraTherm construction supervisor and system operators with equipment commissioning and startup, and operational troubleshooting as necessary.
Demonstrated hands-on experience with remediation equipment, including design, fabrication, integration, operation and trouble shooting.
Always look for new and better ways to streamline the cost and performance of ISTD, capture information through documentation, and make overall improvements as learning takes place.
As directed, develop new methods/equipment in accordance with approved budget and scope.
Continue to gain knowledge on the remediation of hazardous materials by reading relevant trade journals and related information.
Travel as necessary to perform position description duties. Expect 20% travel for periods of 1 to 2 weeks and occasionally up to 4 weeks at one time, based on project work load.
Three to five years direct chemical engineering experience, preferably in an operating process equipment environment. Experience with thermal oxidizers, acid gas scrubbers, solvent condensers, and similar equipment preferred.
Small / start-up company experience, preferred but not required.
Prefer experience in a remediation technology engineering environment, but not required.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, AutoCAD.
BS Chemical Engineering degree required.
MS highly desirable.
40 Hr. OSHA Hazwoper training, and current 8 hr. refresher training (preferred, but not required).
Valid driver?s license required.

Ability to take direction and act independently.

Level of Supervision:
Work with limited direct supervision based on general instructions, directions or objectives received from Project Manager or Supervisor.
