The Opportunity
PatientsLikeMe is looking for a talented and proven technical leader to join the company as Chief Technology Officer (CTO). A critical role within the organization and a key member of the executive management team, the CTO will lead towards establishing a highly sophisticated, disciplined, efficient, and best-in-class software engineering environment.
The CTO will be expected to:
Establish a software engineering organization capable of fulfilling strategic aspirations within the parameters of cost, quality and time.
Define, develop and deploy an Enterprise Architecture that maximizes market opportunities and keeps engineering aligned with business goals - providing a firm, flexible foundation for the future.
Drive all elements of the company's engineering operations while creating a highly predictable and reliable software execution approach that ensures the highest level of quality.
Be a visible and externally facing leader, able to establish rapport and build relationships with stakeholders and partners within the industry.
Ultimately, this position represents a unique opportunity for a confident and self-motivated technology executive with natural leadership and strong management skills to construct and operate an entire development organization within a high-growth opportunity. This pivotal position will report directly to the CEO.
Key Responsibilities
The CTO will have a broad range of responsibilities that include the following:
Serve as the leader of the technology organization. Lead and facilitate the decision-making process for the overall technical and architectural product direction.
Oversee the technology roadmap for the company.
Define, design, and implement an architecture that will allow the company to scale its patient network, and enrich its data set by integrating with other data sources (such as apps, devices and EMR systems).
Work with the product organization to lead a complete platform overhaul with the goal of making it more patient friendly and improving patient acquisition, retention and engagement.
Segment and design system layers to support componentized and layered application development, including user interface, business functionality, search and data aggregation, database access and database engineering.
Create a disciplined and process-oriented technology and development organization that is measurable, repeatable and predictable.
Oversee software development cycle that effectively utilizes all employees and technical capabilities.
Develop a strong understanding of stakeholder needs.
Responsible for the planning, coordination, management, and successful delivery of software product releases.
Oversee project plans and development schedules. Proactively manage and communicate project status and risks.
Manage team performance by setting clear development objectives and continuously monitoring performance
Set a high standard for teamwork, results, and levels of stakeholder awareness and service, and have the ability to be flexible and adaptable when necessary.
Stay abreast of the latest technology developments and industry trends and recommend opportunities for additional pursuit.
Coach, manage, mentor, and recruit a high-performing team.
Create and sustain a culture that will attract and retain key talent.
Act as a full-fledged member of the company?s management team.
Contribute as necessary and appropriate to other business functions (such as Business Development, Marketing, Marketing, Product Management)
The Candidate
The CTO will be a technology leader with at least 15 years of broadly based, progressive experience with B2C and B2B application development and deployment. He /she will bring a proven track-record of leading all facets of a complex distributed environment, with broad knowledge of a variety of technology platforms, tools and languages.

And someone who believes strongly in the company we are building that puts patients front and center in healthcare.
He/she must bring outstanding management abilities and a proven track record of hands-on technology and business leadership. The successful candidate will be process oriented, metric/measurement driven, and well-versed in architectural design. Have superior organizational and planning skills, written/verbal presentation, and the ability to present complex technical information, in a clear and concise manner to a variety of audiences, in large and small groups. A comprehensive understanding and experience in all aspects of the software development life cycle is required.
Additionally a successful candidate:
Has a Masters of Science (e.g. Masters in Computer Science).
Has experience with the Agile and Lean development methodologies.
Is knowledgeable with the Ruby-on-Rails software stack.
Is a self-starter with entrepreneurial spirit.
Can travel up to 10% of the time.
