As a key member of the executive team, the CTO will report directly to the company?s founder & CEO, Jud Bowman. The candidate will bring to the team solid experience in driving the technical map and strategic vision for the Company. This role has been created to accelerate product innovation and scale so that it can be ahead of the company?s 3-year business plan. Appia?s business is growing exponentially in terms of customers, revenue and transactions. It is an ideal time to bring on a CTO that can build and lead a world-class development and operations team with the sole focus of delivering a product platform that is reliable and available, and can scale with the business,
Ideally, the candidate will have contributed in the recent past to the success of a leading internet company where s/he developed the key skills to be successful in this role:
Strategy/Vision of how to build a transactional platform that can scale into the billions per day and service customers on a 7x24 basis
Leadership in growing and mentoring a team of highly skilled software development and technical operations professionals
Executive orientation to translate the needs of the business to an actionable and successful technology plan
This role requires a CTO that can think strategically and operate tactically to drive and deliver on the technical vision. The role requires a personality that is equally comfortable working with the software development and operations teams on tactical deliverables, as well as participating and leading strategic initiatives with other members of the executive team and the Board. In a nutshell, this role demands someone that has built highly scalable platforms that are the backbone for a successful and sustainable commercial venture.
A proven executive recognized for identifying technology strategy and leading a team of at least 30+ architects, software engineers, QA, and systems/operations administrators in delivering and managing the result.
A 15+ year technology career track with progressively responsible roles, preferably across internet/mobile or SaaS based ventures.
Commercial success in scaling from the ground up a high-volume technology platform capable of serving billions of transactions and servicing customers across the globe.
Experience in managing all of the development and operations activities necessary to take design specifications from architecture to general production delivery.
Strong experience with agile software development techniques.
Hands-on experience developing schedules, budgets, quality goals and contingency plans and then gaining buy-in from peers in the execution and delivery of them.
An ability to represent the needs of the technology team at the executive level and to participate in healthy debates with co-executives on corporate and departmental goals.
Educational background in engineering or Computer Science, plus an MBA qualification is highly desirable.
Respected by peers and colleagues as a technology builder - both from a product and people perspective.
Entrepreneurial DNA - capable of starting something from scratch, developing it over time, doing more with less, and persevering through all the ups + downs of any successful commercial venture.
A management style that establishes a high level of team participation and interaction, while always serving as a mentor and coach.
Results orientation with exceptional time management and organizational skills, including the ability to accurately gauge project duration, deliver quality output on budget and on time, solve problems and see them through to resolution.
Excellent communication skills - both speaking and listening. A demonstrated ability to influence and gain buy-in from all internal stakeholders.
Ability to work well cross-functionally across the company and with the Board.
