EverydayHealth.com seeks a proven, exceptional Health Editor to join our growing team that is transforming us into the No. 1 source for news, information and community on health topics ranging from heart disease to medical miracles to how the latest studies improve our daily lives.
The Health Editor covers many topics but must be the in-house expert on assigned topics. The Health Editor is responsible for making his/her particular sections the definitive digital resource for news and information on these health conditions. S/he will achieve this by cultivating a network of freelancers, bloggers and experts with substantial social followings to contribute to the site; actively participating on external social networks and sites relevant to his/her assigned conditions and distributing Everyday Health content with the goal of increasing referring visits; as well as making assignments and reporting in those topic areas. In other words, the Health Editor is expected to use all available avenues (EverydayHealth.com, community, social media, mobile, video, and other emerging platforms with a specific emphasis on SEO) to create the largest possible community of interest around his/her specific health conditions.
Pitch, report, write, assign, edit socially-engaging and relevant health news stories that meet Everyday Health?s news and condition needs and resonate with online and social media audiences.
Identify valuable partnership with health portals, influential websites, leading health and medical bloggers, and patients to expand the reach of EH.com ? and then help to recruit these organizations.
Monitor Web sites, morning shows, radio programs, magazine articles, blogs, social media to stay on top of the latest health news
Work with major medical journals, medical organizations and their respective annual scientific meeting and government and non-profit organizations, including the CDC, FDA, USDA, and more, to stay ahead of embargoed news to pitch engaging/fresh/virally appealing stories.
Assemble and curate feeds of staff, freelance, user and externally produced content of interest to EH audiences.
Write and produce promotional blurbs, captions, and headlines for sites, newsletters, feeds and Social accounts.
Contribute coverage, UX, and display ideas for our sites, newsletters, feeds and Social network programming
A successful candidate will have a proven background in digital journalism -- ideally, health journalism. S/he must be passionate about medicine, health, and wellness and must possess a great nose for news; superb reporting, writing, editing and display-copy skills; solid connections among writers and health experts (and a fearlessness about establishing new ones); and an interest in engaging with EverydayHealth.com users about their health concerns. The successful candidate must have demonstrated skills in harnessing the power of social media (especially Facebook and Twitter) to drive traffic. In addition to the foregoing, Health Editors are regularly asked to conceive and spearhead new initiatives in mobile, social, video and other emerging platforms; thus, a strategic mindset is critical. The successful candidate has a strong understanding of digital performance metrics and the ability to use them to inform daily programming and traffic goals; is comfortable in a fast-paced, creative environment that requires meticulous attention to detail; is able to multi-task in pursuit of tight deadlines; possesses a willingness to take on new responsibilities; and has the ability to nimbly shift priorities in response to changing market health.
