Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will provide hands-on accounting operational support for our company. This is an opportunity for a talented controller to help lead the accounting group as the company continues to experience significant growth. This position will also help set accounting policies, help design and implement automation of accounting processes, help improve procedures and internal controls, and help enhance our billing systems. The successful candidate will be able to apply his/her technical accounting knowledge, and analytical skills to build and lead a dynamic, first class, highly scalable and efficient accounting team for a fast growth company.
Playing lead role in coordinating annual financial statement audit / acting as primary liaison to external auditors
Managing month-end close process and financial statement preparation
Managing day-to-day accounting operations, including billing and collections and accounts payable
Developing and mentoring existing staff
Recruiting, hiring, and training additional staff as needs arise
Providing insight into operational variances to forecast or trend
Ensuring compliance and accurate and timely reporting with regard to various tax and regulatory filings
Collaborating with various teams within Avalara on purchasing and other financial processes
Compiling and analyzing performance data and metrics
Identifying actionable insights and recommendations regarding processes and internal controls
Effectively communicating information and results to cross-functional groups
Playing a key role in the development and management of reporting systems
Prepare the company for SOX compliance in anticipation of a future IPO.

Must be adept at researching technical accounting issues and applying to business operations
Must have substantial experience in full financial statement preparation, including cash flows and full disclosures
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, experience with Great Plains preferred
Experience / Knowledge:
A Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting or Business is required; MBA would be a plus
CPA is required, active status preferred.
Minimum 10 years progressively responsible accounting and finance experience, of which a minimum of 4 years must be in a technology industry and a minimum 5 years as a controller or higher position.
Experience in SaaS and software industries preferred.
Experience in high-tech, fast growth start-ups is required.
Experience with a Big 4 or other national accounting firm required.
Experience in both small high growth start-ups and large public companies preferred
Experience with SEC filings
