We are seeking a highly motivated attorney with 5-7 years of practicing intellectual property law for a unique and exciting opportunity. This attorney will play an important role in maintaining and improving the quality of LegalZoom products, managing the company?s IP, and performing traditional in-house counsel functions.
What you?ll do:
Execute a broad range of initiatives relating to LegalZoom products, including:
Careful, in-depth review, analysis, and revision of components;
Regular review and updating of offerings and components; and
Management of internal monitoring systems and compliance programs
Strategically develop and manage cross-departmental plans to meet company goals in product quality and positively affect product development, design, and operations
Ensure awareness of and responsiveness to quality standards, requirements, and procedures with departments, subject matter experts, and external resources. This will include:
Analyzing and recommending product improvement strategies to executives
Guiding and training product groups
Managing attorneys serving as product consultants and strategic partners
Develop and maintain internal product quality systems, including:
Component inventory
Knowledgebase
Policies, training materials, and standardization
Liaise with operational managers to ensure continuing awareness of and responsiveness to changes in law and procedure
Serve as a resource for internal questions about intellectual property law products and procedures
In coordination with product teams, ideate, develop, and maintain new intellectual property law product lines.
Serve as the corporate legal department?s intellectual property in-house expert.
Analyze potentially conflicting trademark applications and domain name registrations
Draft cease and desist letters
Consider opportunities for the filing of copyrights, trademarks, and patents
Negotiate IP licensing agreements
Review marketing materials
Maintain website terms of service
Miscellaneous traditional in-house attorney functions
Qualifications:
Between 5 and 7 years of experience solely or primarily practicing transactional intellectual property law at a law firm and/or in-house.
Extensive experience counseling clients with respect to transactional intellectual property law matters (e.g., provide counsel regarding trademark search results, domestic and foreign registration, maintenance of registrations, infringement.)
Experience handling and managing IP disputes, litigation or controversies is strongly preferred but not necessary.
Excellent research, writing, judgment, and analytical skills, including outstanding ?nonlegal? writing skills and the ability to communicate legal information to broad audience
Able to develop and execute project plans in pursuit of a goal, often without detailed step-by-step directives
Exceptional ability to maintain focus and motivation to complete long-term projects
J.D. with excellent academic record
Admission to and good standing with any state bar (CA strongly preferred). If other than California, eligibility to become registered in-house counsel in California required. Multi-state practice or bar admissions a plus.
