Distribution Automation (DA) Operations at Silver Spring supports our utility customers with successful deployments of our wireless mesh networks for DA applications. We are seeking to add a DA Network Engineer to provide architectural guidance to our customers, troubleshoot complex deployment issues, maintain and streamline operational services, and perform technical, operational, and project assorted tasks to ensure our customers success. This position requires a broad technical skill-set used across a network?s life cycle, but also requires excellent customer-facing skills due to frequent and fluid customer interactions.
Understand, implement and convey Silver Spring?s technology for the purposes of providing architectural guidance and design documentation to meet customer needs.
Provide configuration support of our networks and related advanced troubleshooting.
Assist Field Engineers, Project Managers, and other internal resources to distribute best practices that incorporate technical, operational, and business components.
Use Silver Spring software components, including laptop and server-based solutions, to assist and train others, provide product feedback, and perform some administrative duties.
Use a Unix shell to perform advanced network management tasks.
Assist in pre-sales and contracting activities as a subject matter expert in DA.
Become versed in the business elements of Silver Spring deployments to be a resource during the contracting process as a subject matter expert.
Provide architectural guidance on how to support non-DA applications (e.g. AMI) on a common network platform.
Degree from a recognized college or university, with a bachelor?s degree, preferably in a science or engineering discipline (e.g. computer science, networking, mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, or a related field) or equivalent qualifying work or study experience.
Technical Skills ? The ideal candidate would have 3-5 years of direct experience of each of the below topics with an expertise level ranging from of moderate-strong for each.
In-depth practical knowledge of
LAN/WAN networked systems and network design
TCP/IP (ipv4 and ipv6)
Network security and IPsec
RF/Wireless networking ? WiFi, Muni-WiFi, WiMAX, Zigbee, etc
NMS / Network based polling systems
Power/Utility Industry knowledge a strong plus:
Metering, SCADA and DA protocols (e.g. DNP3)
3-5 years of experience in a technical, customer facing role with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Familiarity and experience using relevant applications such as Excel, Microsoft Visio, Google Earth, etc. Database experience a plus.
Excellent ability to multi-task and track multiple independent concurrent projects and manage them to resolution in a timely manner.
At least two years of experience using the Unix shell and basic Unix utilities (or a vendor-specific command line configuration method) highly preferable.
Willingness to travel up to 25% within North America, but occasional international travel may be required.
