The Energy Data Analyst will join a top-flight R&D team of Staff Scientists, Software Developers and Building Engineers with decades of deep academic and industry experience. As part of an industry-leading Venture-backed startup on a rapid growth path, s/he will be expected to ?own? the entire chain of managing the vast quantities of data that FirstFuel consumes and analyzes. This includes pre-screening of interval, weather and building data for quality, consistency and completeness; devising and implementing new and current data quality tests; devising and presenting appropriate metrics of building performance; devising and reporting process metrics; archiving and presenting consolidated metrics across multiple portfolios; and working with Information Security to ensure state of the art data security and privacy guidelines are followed.
The Energy Data Analyst is expected to develop a solid understanding of the environment surrounding the generation, recording and storage of electric interval data (typically 15 minute interval data) and/or smart meter data. Prior knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS) generated data is a plus but not mandatory. Working knowledge of Matlab is highly desirable. Experience developing analyses in a standard data mining platform like Matlab, SAS, SPSS, or R or equivalent custom software package developed in Python, Java or similar is required.
Devise and deploy the core automated processes that pre-process, clean and present the required input data for further downstream processing.
Develop and implement standard quality checks/algorithms and continuously improve upon these in collaboration with the Research team to develop a set of metrics to qualify this post-processed data and flag exceptions for further review by Staff Scientists or Implementation team
Develop and deploy metrics characterizing both individual buildings and portfolios.
Develop canned reports and ad-hoc queries in SQL or other Data Mining platform and work closely with Building Engineers to troubleshoot production data issues
Work will require effective cooperation with local and global teams. This position is not expected to involve significant (greater than 15%) travel.
Bachelors degree in an Engineering or other quantitative field e.g., Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Econometrics, etc.
3+ years developing analyses in Matlab, SAS, SPSS, R or equivalent custom software package developed in Python, Java or similar.
2+ years working in the electric energy data domain, preferably with interval and/or smart meter data
Strong programming skills with extensive experience with at least one Object Oriented, interpreted or scripting language. Must have coded extensively and be prepared to demonstrate examples.
Must have developed data mining algorithms and/or statistical tests with real life data.
Ability to rapidly prototype and demonstrate new ideas.
Strong communication and presentation skills.
Passion for energy and clean technologies.
Working knowledge of building operations and energy efficiency in large buildings.
Masters degree in a quantitative field.
Knowledge of Building Automation Systems.
Familiarity with software development and deployment lifecycles, especially QA and test automation methodologies.
Proficiency in one or more of Matlab, Java and Python.
Cloud platform programming experience (e.g., Amazon Web Services).
Work experience in a Venture-backed software startup.
