Developer / Analyst, Content and Search
At WhitePages we intend to expand our lead as the Internet people and business search site with the largest, most comprehensive content. There are tremendous challenges in managing our large dataset, incorporating new data sources and updating existing sources while providing the best experience for our users. The Developer/Analyst role in the WhitePages Content & Search Team is responsible for defining and implementing the best process for integrating new sources of people and business data into our current dataset; this includes sophisticated analysis of inconsistencies and duplications. The position requires an understanding of the competitive environment, and interacts with individuals across all levels of the company including Business Development, Sales, Marketing, Technology, and especially Product and Program Management.
Responsibilities
Development of data transformation and analysis tools:
Create automated methods for loading, maintaining and profiling various components of WhitePages contact information data (name, address, phone number, etc.).
Design, apply and invent tools for correcting errors, identifying and removing duplicate data, merging multiple data sources, and validating correctness
Advanced use of SQL and extensive use of ETL, Web & database tools to gather and test data.
Data collection and analysis:
Assist other team members in various tasks including building and loading WhitePages data and content, log file data collection and analysis, competitive analysis, and other activities in support of the Content & Search Team.
Will collect, tabulate and analyze large quantities of data and metadata and write concise summaries of findings.
Analyze log files to track error codes and general profile of searches on WhitePages and associated sites.
Participation in software development cycle:
Partner with software engineers, architects and program managers to define data requirements for new products.
Deliver automated tools, data loads and analysis to support the progress of a software development team.
Report bugs and enhancements and participate in bug triage meetings.
General:
Provide ongoing analysis of the product-related factors that are impacting business metrics and recommend initiatives to positively impact business results.
Evaluate industry metrics and product performance versus industry baseline.
Providing supporting information and analysis for periodic business reports.
Requirements
BA/BS in Computer Science or Information Systems, or equivalent relevant work experience.
3-4 years as a hands-on developer, DBA or QA engineer with relevant experience.
Extensive experience & working knowledge of SQL required. Postgres experience a plus.
Knowledge of ETL tools and data quality management strongly desired.
Knowledge of Unix scripting tools and the use of regular expressions strongly desired.
Experience with XML and web services strongly desired.
Experience with software configuration management tools strongly desired. Git experience a plus.
Passionate about the analysis of huge data sets required. Hadoop experience a plus.
Sound analytical, problem resolution, judgment and decision-making skills required.
Experience with statistical modeling helpful but not required.
Experience with launching Internet products/services desired.
Ability to interact with diverse technical and non-technical groups, spanning all organizational levels.
Experience with large-scale, aggressive, and dynamic technical projects, with competing resources and priorities.
Firm sense of accountability and ownership for end-to-end project lifecycle.
Affinity for understanding technology products and how they function in order to be successful.
Excellent verbal and written skills.
Demonstrated ability to implement processes, and maintain deadlines with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated reliability, integrity and confidentiality.
