Director, Medical Science Liaisons Avanir Pharmaceuticals
POSITION DETAILS
As an integral member of the Medical Affairs leadership team, the Director, Medical Science Liaison (MSL Director) will further develop and lead an experienced and CNS-focused Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team at Avanir. In this role, there are considerable opportunities to contribute to the long-range cross-functional development and medical vision for the Company. The MSL Director will interact with a number of groups, which include Medical Affairs, Clinical Research and Commercial counterparts.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Knowledge in and responsibility for collaboration with all functional areas and initiatives outside MSL department, including, but not limited to, Medical Information, Drug Safety, and Clinical Research.
Develops and provides strategic guidance to a team of MSLs to establish and further develop collaborative relationships with opinion leaders.
Strategically position efforts of the MSLs between Key Opinion Leaders (KOL) interactions, Medical Meetings, Investigator Initaited Studies (IIS), Publication Planning, Medical Information, and other activities.
Implement and manage a database to capture and report activities of the MSL team to Senior Management to inform the future development of MSLs and other members of the Medical Affairs department.
Manage the MSLs contributions to the development of the medical publication and conference presentation strategy to ensure clear and consistent communication.
Support the development and implementation of clinical advisory boards and other scientific meetings with academic investigators to explore potential new indications, and procure input on the overall clinical development plan.
Working in conjunction with the Nuedexta development team, evaluate and prioritize potential external clinical research collaboration opportunities that inform the Investigator Initiated Studies (IIS) program.
In addition to the Management duties above, develop operational strategies that:
- Maintain existing relationships and establish new collaborative KOL relationships.
- Working directly with key opinion leaders, develop scientific education activities while ensuring compliance with policies and standards.
- Engage scientifically at Neurology and Psychiatry national and regional conferences, meetings and other scientific venues.
- Monitor the competitive environment to sustain expertise in therapeutic area treatment management and new therapies, competitive products and features and provide feedback to the senior management team on specific initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 8 years of experience in Medical Affairs within the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry with previous experience in successfully recruiting, developing and leading a team of MSLs.
Neurology, Psychiatry or geriatric experience preferred.
Ability to understand and effectively communicate scientific / medical and commercial components of drug products to the medical community and other key internal and external audiences.
Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills (including strong demonstration of ability to network and collaborate with others).
Knowledge and understanding of disease management and emerging markets preferred.
Ability to respond appropriately to needs of key stakeholders and manage expectations; excellent project management skills and follow through.
Demonstrated ability to excel in smaller entrepreneurial organizations.
Must have excellent PC skills (MS Office) and familiar with current clinical software and database tools.
EDUCATION
Advanced degree (M.D., PhD or PharmD.) required.
