POSITION SUMMARY:
Director of BD, located in South San Francisco, CA, and reporting to Vice President of BD, will be responsible for identifying and executing revenue-generating deals for BioSeek in the western United States region and Japan. Director of BD will have solid science background, thorough understanding of pharmaceutical drug discovery and will be a member of BioSeek's expanding business development and marketing team. Director of BD will also join the project management and technical operations teams at BioSeek.
BioSeek LLC, with it's offices in South San Francisco, California, is a fully owned subsidiary of Asterand Inc. and a pioneer in applying predictive human biology for pharmaceutical drug discovery. BioSeek scientists have developed a powerful, innovative human primary cell-based screening and profiling technology platform that models complex human biology, and which is used to identify, profile and develop drug candidates for our biotech and pharma partners. BioSeek's business includes short-term fee-for-service projects as well as long-term drug discovery collaborations.
POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Identifies revenue-generating business opportunities with pharma and biotech industry , including service contracts, long-term partnerships and technology licensing
Delivers on personal and company revenue goals set by VP BD
In collaboration with BioSeek's Project Management Team evaluates new opportunities and their scientific and strategic fit for BioSeek
Executes all day-to-day aspects of deal closing including drafting and negotiation of technical and business proposals, term sheets and contracts. Utilizes legal counsel, accounting and finance function as required to complete contract negotiations
Collaborates with Asterand's sales team on lead generation
Prepares briefings to VP BD, organizes and tracks documents and reports on the status of the business development pipeline
With BioSeek's Project Management Team, participates in the management of signed deals and ongoing collaborations
Must be available to travel domestically and internationally (30-50%)
Participates in the development and execution of marketing strategy, including sales and presentation materials, marketing communications, and industry trade shows and scientific conferences
QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires a thorough understanding of the pharmaceutical and biotech industry and of the drug discovery process
Advanced degree in life science or business is required, preferably a PhD or MBA
Prior experience (minimum 5 years) in business development or selling scientific solutions is required, including lead generation, and preparation and negotiating of proposals and contracts. Experience with managing collaborative partnerships is a plus.
Reliability, pro-active hands-on attitude and the ability to work independently is a key success factor
Prior experience with leading or participating in drug discovery programs or other types of technical or scientific programs in biotech or pharma organizations is not a strict requirement but is highly desirable
Superior presentation, communication and analytical skills are essential, including experience presenting complex service (scientific) solutions to scientists and executives in biotech and pharma companies
The candidate must be a team player and should be comfortable working globally
Well organized but with a sense of urgency to meet BioSeek's revenue goals
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Occasionally required to work evenings, weekends
Travel 30-50% required, including international travel.
