Summary:
An experienced leader in multi-disciplinary engineering management, this individual is responsible for managing the resources assigned to projects focused on innovative new products in the CoolSculpting technology portfolio. Such projects include new platform development as well as products that enhance the performance, capabilities and utility of current systems. This individual is accountable for leading disciplines that includes systems engineering, software development and V&V, electronics engineering and mechanical engineering. The candidate leverages strong technical acumen to provide technical mentoring and support to team members, and to ensure company product release commitments are met.
The Director of Design Engineering works closely with other functional leaders, especially with project management in planning resources, resolving conflicts and improving processes. The individual should be a champion of cross functional collaboration and process excellence. Key measures of success include an ability to grow the technical and execution capabilities of the organization, aligned to business goals for growth and profitability.
In addition, this individual will be expected to provide input and ideas as part of product roadmap and technology planning processes, and demonstrate strong business acumen with a customer centric perspective.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following (other duties may be assigned):
Functional management of multi-disciplinary engineering staff, to include mentoring and development of skills aligned to technology and capability needs of the organization.
Establishment of team accountability to project deliverables, through participation and collaboration with the project management function.
Leadership in development of strategic hiring plan to build skills and capacity aligned to product roadmaps.
Building strong team motivation and engagement, providing vision and recognition.
Resource planning and conflict resolution, including creative solutions to staffing such as supplementary use of outsourcing.
Broad technical leadership, participating in guidance to the organization in technology selections and decision making.
Close collaboration with Product Innovation group, assessing product and technology ideas and ensuring feasibility and risk retirement of new technologies for incorporation to new products.
Specification and qualification of engineering tools and technologies to be used in the creation of innovative new products.
Focus on design process excellence, adopting and promoting best practices and solutions to deliver robust and reliable designs, as well as design execution predictability.
Provide input and ideas as part of product roadmap and technology planning processes.
Responsible for performing all duties in compliance with FDA?s Quality System Regulation (QSR), ISO13485, the Canadian Medical Device Regulations, and all other international regulatory requirements with which ZELTIQ complies.
Qualifications:
BS degree, MS degree desirable. 8+ years in a senior functional management role, and 7+ years in other design or technical leadership roles.
Experienced in development of products within a structured design and project management methodology.
Ability to understand product functionality at a systems level, and skilled in best practices for design quality including design review, risk management, design for manufacture and design for service.
Expertise with embedded software systems, analog and digital electronics design and a good working knowledge of mechanical packaging.
Experience in developing products for the medical devices industry, in an environment employing ISO and FDA quality system regulations.
Additional Requirements:
Ability to define problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and recommendations. Six Sigma exposure desirable.
Demonstrated experience in driving design for manufacturability and service, and design to cost targets and reliability goals.
Proven record in process development and improvement.
Working knowledge of clinical environments and direct experience with end customers.
Ability to read technical and clinical literature and documents and extract important concepts.
Ability to develop, understand and manage to departmental budgets.
Strong business acumen with a customer centric perspective.
Excellent communication and organization skills, with an analytical and problem solving mindset.
Ability to multi-task and complete assignments on time.
