Reporting to: VP Operations and Service
The Director of Operations will direct the production operations for our manufacturing team, including but not limited to the Northern Power 100kW permanent magnet direct drive wind turbine. Significant focus will be on matching workforce and capacity availability with mid- to long-term anticipated / actual customer demand; s/he will achieve maximum production efficiencies while maintaining expected product quality levels and delivering completed products on-time.
S/he will direct all manufacturing activities (production, inventory control, quality, safety, testing, shipping and receiving) at the operating level and to achieve effective and efficient use of facilities and personnel, as well as conformance to schedules and budgets.
Management responsibilities include developing and implementing policies and procedures, formulating manufacturing operations strategies, building and mentoring manufacturing employees and driving business results. This includes ensuring the highest quality equipment, materials and production standards, overseeing and maintaining manufacturing budgets and working with engineers and purchasing staff to manufacture quality products that will meet customers' expectations in the most cost-effective manner.
Using process, quality and production improvement methodologies, the Director of Manufacturing Operations directs the development, planning, implementation and maintenance of manufacturing methods for new or existing products and technologies. This includes outgoing quality, safety and efficiency improvements for all manufactured operations and compliance with safety, state and federal regulations.
Develops and oversees implementation of large scale changes to manufacturing and production strategies, inclusive of human, equipment, and facilities resources to manufacture NPS products
Manages and motivates employees from multiple disciplines; has both direct and indirect reports. Directs the activities of Managers and Supervisors within production as well as functional experts at the individual contributor level.
Decides, develops and leads implementation of manufacturing and production strategies to assure competitive cost, quality & delivery
Responsible to improve cost of goods sold (COGS) particularly the direct labor, overhead, shop supplies and related costs.
Directs the execution of the strategic and operating plans for all of our manufacturing operations. Responsible for Production, Testing, Quality, Inventory Control, Safety, and Shipping and Receiving
Implement and direct lean production methods with pull approach.
Conceives of and champions cross-functional manufacturing and production process improvement initiatives
Has direct or shared accountability for developing and achieving the financial and operational (e.g., cost, quality, capacity, on-time delivery) goals of operations group, inclusive of production and quality standards and goals.
Anticipates future capacity requirements based on forecast/actual demand and makes decisions regarding the most cost effective long-term resourcing solutions; oversees and adjusts the implementation of those solutions
Accountable for meeting commitments for customer delivery with a high level of quality and on-time delivery, partnering with Logistics experts to achieve success.
Accountable to establish and maintain a positive production work environment and employee morale
Translates short- to mid-term division strategies into operating goals and plans for the entity directed; ensures that these plans are fully coordinated with those of related departments
Works closely with cross functional departments such as engineering, service, sales and finance to ensure customer delight and meet all internal reporting requirements.
Fosters a safe and clean work environment in coordination with facilities staff.
Regularly interacts with senior executives, customers, and vendors within related departments to influence business decisions of material impact
Leads the resolution of escalated production issues; escalates highly complex strategic or operating issues or requests to gain cooperation at the highest levels of management
Participates in resolving process and operational standards conflicts
Leads the development, training and support of his/her staff
Conducts or reviews regular performance reviews, sets or reviews annual performance goals, determines compensation adjustments and awards and develops mid- to long-term career development plans for senior level personnel

Bachelor's degree required
Ten years of experience in manufacturing management (or equivalent), with demonstrated experience in leadership.
Excellent verbal and written skills.
Excellent organizational skills.
Has expert level proficiency with relevant ERP tools
Knowledge of six sigma and/or lean production methods.
Has expert knowledge of / skills in the content areas of:
- Manufacturing theory and techniques
- Business strategy / execution
- Organizational design and optimization
- Troubleshooting / decision making
- Cross-functional consensus building
- Organization / prioritization
- Financial / cost-benefit analysis
Master?s Degree in a related field
Six Sigma expertise (black or green belt)
Travel 25% to other locations supported by manufacturing operations
Typical office environment as well as working on demand in the manufacturing assembly environment in order to support the operation
