The Director of Software Development position reports to the Vice President of Engineering. The Director is responsible for the strategy and implementation of software development, and to oversee the design, development and implementation of innovative software products, relying on a strong technical
skill-set and creativity. The Director provides direct oversight and is responsible for activities to develop software systems that align with the Product Management team?s goals and chief architect's non-functional requirements. The Director works closely with the chief architect and product owners to ensure goals are met. The Director of Software Development manages managers, line teams and project teams of developers and other staff. The successful Director will promote test-driven and agile development, as well as other industry standards and best practices, across the organization. The Director will illustrate the capacity to work independently on significant, complex and unique issues or problems that require an in-depth knowledge of the discipline. The Director will refine and optimize processes and procedures, must possess and exercise independent judgment, and steer the organization to obtain great results. A strong background in educational software is a major plus.
Directs software development activities that align with requirements specified by the Product Management, as well as the chief architect's
Establishes strategic plans and objectives to drive the design, development and implementation of software products
Contributes collaboratively within a creative and fast-paced environment to ensure design of high quality, scalable and innovative solutions that adhere to industry standard architectures and best practices
Ensures development teams correctly specify, architect, prototype, implement and deliver adaptive learning applications
Works independently and without regular supervision to drive new feature development
Delivers configurable solutions
Establishes and oversees standards for coding, debugging and other engineering processes
Makes recommendations on software enhancements, libraries and other technical upgrades to avoid and resolve technical debt
Resolves complex conceptual and technical issues problems
Supervisory responsibilities for line and matrixed teams
Contributes to planning, staffing, budgeting, and process decisions; manages budget priorities
Manages the activities of a broad functional area, together with other managers, within the company
Requires 12+ years of relevant experience and/or 8 + years of management and area-specific experience in addition to
6-8+ years? experience managing teams of software developers
10+ years? experience architecting and programming multi-tier, with an emphasis given to ASP.NET applications in C#
BS in Computer Science or equivalent combination of education and experience; Advanced degree a plus
Experience with software design patterns such as IoC and SOA
Experience building SaaS applications, packages software (COTS) applications, and cloud applications
Ability to evaluate performance of individual engineers and teams, and to prescribe appropriate remedies for issues
Ability to lead design sessions, architecture development sessions, project estimation sessions, architecture reviews and code reviews
Strong experience with data access technologies including LINQ and SQL
Strong written and verbal communication skills
A strong background in educational software is a major plus
