About the Team
The Software Development team is responsible for developing, testing, and maintaining our applications and services, including handsets, mobile applications, safety services, and our customer facing website. Despite the rapid growth of the team, we strive to maintain a culture of collaboration, empowerment, shared responsibility, and openness to learning from failure. We also provide our talented Software Engineers the opportunity to learn, experiment, and grow as a result. We are moving towards a continuous delivery environment, where we use SCRUM for all our product development projects, and will be applying a Lean Startup methodology for the major new products that are on our roadmap.
About the JobThis position reports to the VP of IT and Software Development. As the Director of Team Development and Planning, you will be managing a large team of over a dozen Software Engineering and SQA professionals. You will lead their personal development plan creation, and track progress against these plans. You will be responsible for the management, development, and the culture of the Software Development team
In addition, you will be responsible for resource management for the Software Engineering and SQA staff. You will work closely with Project Managers and the team leadership to maintain the medium-term tactical plan for resource alignment and prioritization. This is a perfect role for someone who has strong software engineering management and planning experience. The ideal candidate will have experience in both development and testing. We are an end-to-end solutions provider, so experience with hardware, software, cellular networks, and backend systems will be helpful.
Promote a culture of collaboration, empowerment, shared responsibility, and openness to learning from failure
Lead Software Development and SQA individualized professional development plan creation, and track progress against this plan.
Collaborate with Software Architecture team and the Organizational Development partners in HR in coaching and mentoring of direct reports.
Serve as the point of contact for all HR related issues for the software development team. These duties include hiring of new staff and performance evaluations for existing team members.
Maintain and publish the medium-term tactical plan and related tools for resource alignment and prioritization.
Provide weekly workload assignment for Developers and SQA Analysts.
Lead planning the work associated with the many interdependent products and systems, which are in different stages of development, but all require ongoing attention. This includes creating and maintaining tools to help map the system- and product dependencies for the purposes of planning and impact analysis.
Bachelor?s degree required, preferably in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering
Minimum 8 years experience managing a Software Development or Software Quality Assurance team
Possess working knowledge of SDLC and agile development methodologies
Excellent leadership skills
Superior organizational and multi-tasking skills.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely through both written and verbal means.
Ability and insight to effectively influence others.
Ability to work in an environment using SCRUM and Lean Startup methodologies
Prior experience as either a Software Developer or Quality Assurance Tester a plus.
Demonstrated experience with multiple device application platforms (J2ME, BREW, Android, iPhone) and system architectures is a plus
Demonstrated experience with .NET, ASP.NET and SQL Server is a plus
