This position is envisioned as a finance person focused on supporting the activities of the Research and Development departments. Hands-on role spanning a wide range of responsibilities, including planning, budgeting and forecasting for clinical trials and research programs, and contract negotiations. Would act as a liaison between Finance and other departments on financial matters related to Research and/or Development, and would be a business partner to Research, Development and Program Management. Reports to the CFO,
Roles and Responsibilities
Budgeting and Forecasting ? Lead in preparing the annual operating, clinical study, capital and headcount budgets and forecasts for Research and Development. Review actual vs. budget and provide variance analysis and recommendations/support for budget revisions. Present executive level financial packages to CFO, Management Team, and assist in preparing financial/budget slides for BOD meetings.
Long Range Planning ? Prepare multi-year Research and Development forecast for out-of-pocket and headcount expenses, incorporating Clinical, Regulatory, Manufacturing, Program Management, and Pre-clinical for use by Finance and Business Development for potential funding and licensing decisions. Facilitate portfolio optimization process by providing cost/scenario analysis, to support strategic decision making.
Accounting and Finance ? Assist Director of Accounting with month, quarter, and year-end close. Prepare accruals from work orders in accordance with GAAP. Provide spreadsheet tools and budgets to support development of quarterly clinical site invoices.
Alliance Support ? Provide budgeting and financial management/oversight for 3rd party collaborations, including without limitation calculation and support of shared development and FTE-related costs, sales tracking and royalty reporting. Facilitate communicate of financial information to and from partners.
Process Development - Create and document financial processes for Research and Development, including invoice review, site invoicing, purchase order creation and management, and financial SOP?s.
Contracts ? Review and comment on financial sections of all outsourced agreements as part of contract review process. Work closely with General Counsel to prepare and negotiate confidentiality and consulting agreements, and clinical site budgets/agreements.
Minimum BS in Accounting or Finance, prefer MBA and/or CPA. Must have in-depth understanding of drug discovery and development and strong budgeting/forecasting skills. Interpersonal skills are critical; must be able to push for the required outcome/result without alienating colleagues in the operating groups (primarily Development). Good communication/presentation skills also important.

Success will require:

Minimum of 10 years of experience in clinical business operations
