Job Description
This role will represent Silver Spring Networks in standards meetings in various standards development organizations and industry associations and participate in product management, architecture and engineering meetings internally.
You should have at least one technology area where you are an expert, but also be capable of working in areas beyond your expertise. Areas we are interested in are ETSI M2M, cellular data, WIFI and Security.
You will participate in activities relating to product development to ensure the timely and effective implementation of interface and technical standards in SSN products. As part of the CTO Office, the overall focus of the group is on supporting the product roadmap through innovation in industry standards, influencing and driving the industry?s technology agenda, working with partners and competitors in the development of broadly accepted standards, and appropriately representing the company in industry venues. Senior Standards Technologists focus on enhancements to existing standards as well as the development of completely new standards. This position requires an individual to be creative, team-oriented, a technology expert, able to lead multi-vendor teams, and driven to produce results.
Participate in SSN?s product development cycle as an advisor on the implementation of existing and emerging interface and technical standards
Understand the implications of new technology and standards, and how they can be applied to product design and product evolution
Work on architecture, design, taxonomy and use-case definition that leads to the development of new industry standards
Act as a technical advisor and resource to other engineers both within SSN and within Standards Development Organizations
Provide guidance and mentoring to more junior engineers within SSN
Work with partners, competitors and industry associations to ensure the proliferation and adoption of standards important to SSN.
A willingness to work on additional tasks and responsibilities that will positively contribute towards team, department, and company goals
Coordinate the activities of other engineers, serve as a project lead, and/or recognized as an expert in a major technical area
Possess and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proven experience in leading teams in software development and standards development
Work collaboratively within multi-vendor teams of engineers in industry associations, and have strong influencing and leadership skills
Ability to estimate work completion required to build an overall predictable plan
Strong understanding of concepts related to computer architecture, data structures and standard programming practices
Work on very complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation
Develop and drive longer-range project plans and schedules for individual, or work for a team
Creative and analytical approach to problem solving
Responsibilities:
Responsible for unstructured tasks that have wide implications and where multiple outcomes must be driven to closure
Apply broad expertise or unique technical/industry knowledge in solving problems that are unique and extremely complex considering time, budget and resource constraints
Lead and work on complex projects with significant interaction with others; works or solves problems beyond own job function
Demonstrate leadership and vision in determining and driving strategy decisions.
Regularly act as a technical advisor to engineering management
Present standards initiatives to larger audiences
Interaction
Work and communicate effectively with staff to vice-president level employees within the function, across functions and with external parties
Limited supervision is provided, as this individual can operate, drive results, and set priorities independently
Work effectively with Technical Directors across Engineering and Product Management
Participate as a proactive contributor and subject matter expert across multiple standards development organizations
Demonstrate favorable results through leadership and influencing multiple individuals and groups
Act as mentor or facilitator
Supervise the technical activities of others
Required Experience
A minimum of 12 years of experience is required ETSI M2M, cellular data, WIFI and Security
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science, a Master Degree, or a PhD; or equivalent experience is required
Demonstrated ability to have completed multiple, complex technical projects
Proven ability to participated effectively in standards development organizations
