Embedded Systems Engineer (ESE) Atair Aerospace
Purpose of the Position
The Embedded Systems Engineer (ESE) is responsible for developing electronics and software embedded in complex autonomous systems. This individual must have a demonstrated track record in designing and building embedded systems for instrumentation and control. The ESE works closely with the Senior Hardware & Software Engineer and with the Electrical Engineering Technician. The ESE reports to the VP of Engineering.
Responsibilities
The ESE is expected to perform the following duties and have the following responsibilities:
Develop & implement embedded electronics designs
System design, including sensing and communications capabilities
Custom circuit board design & fabrication oversight
Hand population of boards and wiring for prototypes
Write embedded software
Generate, review, code, and optimize algorithms for primary operation, built-in self-test and simulation
Define file and internal data structures
Develop software project structures to allow efficient generation of working code, test code and simulation code
Integrate & test
Plan & perform integration and testing of electro-mechanical systems, including development of simulations & test fixtures for both prototypes and medium scale production
Perform complex debugging
Create thorough documentation of architectures, requirements, interfaces, designs, code and performance specifications
Ancillary Responsibilities
Accompany Atair on test exercises and exhibitions if needed
Travel to off-site locations to work temporarily if needed
Knowledge & Skills
The ESE must possess the following knowledge and skills:
Technical
Hands-on understanding of embedded electrical systems and mechanisms
Experience with autonomous systems
Experience with autonomous vehicles/aircraft ranging in size (30 lbs to 3,000 lbs) a plus
Defense industry and aircraft / UAV experience a plus
Proficiency in data structures & communication protocols, current state of the art in embedded systems processors and interfaces, battery charging systems, electric motors and control systems
Proficiency in position estimation, GPS, telemetry hardware & software
Up-to-date knowledge of the current state of the art in embedded systems processors and interfaces
Proficiency in Linux, C and code version control
Ability to review and evaluate sophisticated mathematical algorithms and to translate them to efficient embedded firmware using C and assembly language as required
General
Effective design & programming process control
Effective written communication skills
Effective verbal communication skills
Computer skills including spreadsheet, word processing, and e-mail at a proficient level
Time management skills
Education & Experience
BS in relevant engineering field required, MS preferred
8 years minimum embedded systems electronics engineering & software experience required, 10+ years preferred
Demonstrated track record in designing low-power embedded systems for instrumentation and control
