Fermentation Microbiologist Gevo

We are looking for a Fermentation Microbiologist, based in Luverne, Minnesota. The Fermentation
Microbiologist will provide technical leadership as part of the Luverne Sterility Team which is an
Implementation Project Sub-team. This team will be responsible for:
? Identifying critical control points throughout cook, fermentation and GIFT
? Identifying sample points and methods
? Collecting, compiling, analyzing and reporting data that is collected during contamination testing
trials and ultimately under normal operating conditions. Data collection, analysis and reporting need
to be accurate and timely.
? Identifying and quantifying contaminants.
? Coordinating with other members of the implementation team and other functional groups on run
plans, results, contamination reduction projects, SOP?s, sample collection, etc.
This person will be responsible for understanding and compiling microbiology data, working with bench
scale personnel on planned experiments and/or identification and quantification of contaminants.
? B.S. degree in General Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Biology or a related discipline
? Candidates are required to have minimum of 4-6 years of professional (not academic) experience
solving industrial problems
? Experience in collecting and analyzing data from plant operations (including carbon and other mass
balances) to provide direction for optimal process development.
? Experience with multiple fermentation configurations (two or more of the following: batch, fed-batch,
continuous, aerobic, and anaerobic).
? Specialized knowledge includes microbial physiology, fermentation principles and operation, basic
PC skills, culture maintenance, aseptic techniques
? Statistical experimental design, literature search capabilities
? Demonstrates curiosity and imagination in identifying and applying new ideas
? Completes assigned tasks as defined and in the timeline given by others
? Ability to identify critical issues.
? Asks probing questions for clarification and to ensure understanding

? Work with peers, management and implementation / sterility team to define pertinent bio-burden
experiments and develop testing protocols.
? Set up, and execute bio-burden and fermentation experiments.
? Collect, process, organize resultant data, and report within agreed time lines.
? Work with analytical chemist to identify and develop analytical protocols: reviews data for anomalies
that may affect results; ensure that analytical information is valid and useful.
? Utilize experience and observations to capture knowledge from experiments, and communicate the
knowledge with colleagues.
? Organize and maintain fermentation-related supplies and equipment
? Conduct troubleshooting experiments, assist with training new employees, orders and audit supplies
for the fermentation laboratory
? Study alternative media sources, pre-treatment scheme, and/or bioreactor designs as currently
envisioned. Works with peers and management to explore the process flow options in the plant by
designing appropriate experiments and collecting and analyzing resultant data.
? Search for ways to continuously improve techniques and procedures
? Contribute to focused and productive research as a member of an interdisciplinary development
team including Engineers, Chemists, Technicians, Microbiologists, and/or Biochemists.
? Participate with legal counsel to protect and enrich the intellectual property portfolio of the Project.
Identify through careful, thoughtful, and thorough research, ways to increase value to the portfolio.
? Independently applies a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions,
products and problems. Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.
Serves as in-house and outside representative.
