Fluidigm is seeking a highly qualified Field Application Scientist (FAS) to support the Company?s four primary product lines, Biomark, C1, EP1, and Access Array. The FAS role is a blended position incorporating both Pre- and Post-sales activities. The overarching view of this role will involve significant participation in a Pre-sales capacity with the introduction of Fluidigm technologies in conjunction with Regional Account Managers. The focus in this capacity will be to create understanding, demand, and support throughout the sales process culminating in adoption of the technology. The FAS must build a relationship of trust and scientific integrity with each customer by understanding the applications of interest and identifying a credible solution that will fill a primary need. Post-sales responsibilities will involve taking lead on the installation and application training at the customer sites, along with a continued relationship of support and involvement to facilitate quick adoption and maximal ongoing use of the system. Key functions throughout the sales and support process include: education of the technology, demand creation, scientific credibility and trust, application support and development through field-based technology demonstration projects, counseling and experimental consultation, and high-level product/application support. Taken together, this role facilitates a continuum from the Pre- to Post-sales relationship with new and existing customers and will serve as the primary representative of Fluidigm in the customer?s eyes. The FAS position carries an expectation of 50%+ travel, primarily to West Coast and Southwest states, with occasional travel to areas outside the geography (Mountain States, Lower Midwest) on an as needed basis.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support market development, growth, and achievement of sales plan
Travel to key customers/prospects to provide technical consultation, create demand, support order close, increase utilization, expand customer networks, and increase awareness
Provide high quality pre-sales support, including product/application education, seminars, and workshops
Support successful product demonstrations utilizing customer samples, appropriate planning of the demo, liaise with technical corporate support team to ensure success, and communicate results back to customers in a way that demonstrates the specific needs of the customer
Provide start-up training and technical guidance involving software, hardware, and chemistry
Consult with select customers post-sale to support application development, enhance utilization, ensure success, and secure customer advocacy
Understand focus areas, views, and influence of key opinion leaders
Participate in application design, data analysis, and authoring of high impact journal articles, application notes, and white papers, where appropriate
Support customer collaborations which specifically address commercial opportunity, application expansion, or growth
Maintain progressive theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular biology, genetics, PCR applications, and sequencing library prep across a wide variety of specialty applications
Keep up to date with the scientific community and track major technical/application trends to support improvements in product positioning, selling strategies, and product/workflow development
Participate in industry organizations, committees, and standards organizations; engage with key opinion leaders
Provide technical expertise with regard to potential new markets, applications, and competitive sales scenarios
Develop and share best practices to sales, marketing, R&D, and application colleagues as appropriate
Provide customer-based technical, market, and application feedback to product management, marketing, and sales teams to guide strategy development
Report field activities and trends back to commercial management through written reports and regular telephone conversations

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
BS in biochemistry, molecular biology, and 8 years of related life science
Preferred Masters or Ph.D. in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology or related discipline
Several years laboratory experience in a life science setting; experience using real-time PCR instrumentation for gene expression/genotyping, Sanger and Next-Gen sequencing, and/or design and use of custom reagents
Demonstrated knowledge/experience in human disease research
Previous application scientist/specialist (FAS) experience preferred
Strong preference for statistical analysis concepts knowledge
