Field Service Technician (FST) - Austin, TX
The FST will perform installation and repair work both at the Customer Premises and within the Central Office (CO) environment. This includes DSL loop testing and repair, premises wiring, router configurations, and cooperative testing and troubleshooting with ILEC technicians.
The FST will also perform Central Office maintenance, installation and upgrades of DSL equipment, perform MegaPath and customer based T1 and T3 turn-ups, installation of wireless equipment, cable installation and must be familiar with DSLAMS, routers and Carrier facilities.
The FST will be expected to install, troubleshoot, and maintain high-capacity (broadband) transmission equipment in MegaPath?s service area, work with other providers of transmission capacity to resolve problems with circuits and must be available at an on-call basis.
The FST must be able to perform additional duties as required including but not limited to the installation of fiber jumpers and associated supporting structure, fiber equipment and installation of some DC power equipment. Project management of multiple site installations, site surveys, CO audits and team initiatives will be required.
The FST must have expertise in VoIP and voice services as well as knowledge of Alternating Current installations.
The FST may be required to perform new and additional services described and agreed upon with specific MegaPath/Partner agreements.
Work independently in hectic environments. Adjust communication to the environment; organize and prioritize work and customer interaction
Respond to customer questions and make good on commitments
Practice and exhibit quality workmanship, excellent work ethic and pride-in-ownership in the execution of all operating and maintenance duties including the proper care of all Company property
Be prepared and available to work on a rotating basis that will cover a seven-day schedule
Isolate and troubleshoot DSL and router problems using accepted CO wiring practices
Prepare and update installation orders and trouble tickets; manage parts inventory
Meet the requirements of Company sponsored development and training programs
Demonstrate knowledge of all Company Policies & Procedures
Carry out routine and special assignments as directed by manager
Maintain a clean and safe company vehicle
Maintain a Safe Driving Record in accordance with MegaPath?s Motor Vehicle Guidelines
Maintain and upgrade software requirements.
Understand and use customer premise wiring practices, safe drilling and ladder practices
Maintain and upgrade DSLAM and router firmware
Working with voice services (LPVA and VoIP)
Conduct site surveys and CO audits
Install and maintain fiber and fiber components when required
Be meticulous in records keeping
Manage team or site projects when required
Maintain a clean and safe CO environment
Requires a minimum of an Associate's degree in related field or equivalent experience, certifications, or training
Must be adept at problem-solving and have good listening skills.
Proficient with computer hardware and software components
Sound understanding of Ethernet, TCP/IP and premise wiring
Proficient in CO environment and equipment
Sound understanding of the use of telco testing equipment, digital meters and computer operating systems. Proficient with T1 and T3 test sets and Central Office termination methods
DC power installation and maintenance; AC power installation knowledge
Knowledge of performing Preventative Maintenance
Proficient with equipment mounting, cabling, lacing and card installation
Knowledge of cable types and color coding
Excellent mechanical skills
Solid customer service skills
Analytical and deductive skill sets required
Understand and demonstrate troubleshooting theory
Experience in telecommunications and LAN, DS0 through OC96 circuits, DS1, DS3 and fiber test sets and testing protocols
Excellent written and verbal skills.
Must be able to comfortably interface with management and customers, both internal and external.
Must have experience with commercial and residential inside wiring practices.
Must be experienced in VoIP and voice services
Project management skills
Experienced in conducting CO audits and site surveys
Proficient in the knowledge and theory of router configurations.
