Freelance-Writers, Journalists, Fact Checkers Healthline Networks
At Healthline Networks, a San-Francisco based health content publisher, our mission is to improve health by offering readers objective, trustworthy, and accurate health information. To accomplish this mission, we are seeking to add to our pool of talented freelance writers and journalists who contribute content on specific health topics.
Healthline publishes health information and news on Healthline.com, and also provides content and services to companies like Yahoo! Health, GE, Microsoft, and Demand Media. We are seeking freelancers for three types of assignments: (1) General Health Content, (2) Health News, and (3) Fact Checking. Pay is on a per-article basis and varies by assignment.
The requirements we set for hiring freelancers vary significantly based on the type of assignment. Please indicate in your cover letter the type of assignments for which you are applying. If you possess the required skills for all three types of assignments, please indicate this.
General Health Content Freelancers:
? Excellent written communication skills and impeccable grammar
? Strong understanding of APA citations
? Knowledge of major publishing styles (AP, Chicago)
? Ability to meet deadlines
? Strong research skills and knowledge of appropriate health research sources
? A background in health or science writing is strongly preferred
? Degree in a relevant field (such as English or Journalism) is preferred
Health News Freelance Journalists:
All the requirements of General Health Content Freelancers, plus:
? A background in news writing
? A portfolio of published general-interest news pieces (online)
? Strong interview skills
? Comfort with fast-turnaround assignments
? Experience fact checking for a major print or online publication
? Ability to meet deadlines
? A background in research

For freelance journalists, please submit 3 published news clips (or links to clips). Most of the writers we work with are experienced professionals; however, we are happy to consider material from recent graduates.
In your cover letter, please note the types of assignments you are applying to write. In addition, please answer the following questions:
1. Please describe the correct use of a semi-colon. We will be especially impressed if you use a semi-colon correctly in another section of your cover letter.
2. Out of the following five sources, please tell us which ones would be acceptable to reference in an authoritative health article: Institute of Medicine, WebMD, National Institutes of Health, CDC, About.com, WHO
3. Please describe a time when you went above and beyond to meet a deadline.
