Mendel is a private agbiotech/agchem company developing solutions for the sustainable production of food, fiber and fuel. We have had longstanding collaborations with Monsanto, Bayer Crop Sciences and other major agricultural companies, and are currently in an exciting new growth phase enabled by a recent internal financing and anticipated near-term revenues from our earlier discoveries. Mendel is seeking a Greenhouse Supervisor. The qualified candidate will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and directing the operations of Mendel's greenhouse. Supervision of a variety of employees including skilled and unskilled greenhouse workers is required.
Responsibilities:
Care for and grow experimental plants (soil prep, pot filling, planting, transplanting, watering, fertilizing, staking, harvesting, dispose)
Work closely with functional group's staff to assure plants cared for properly
Write protocols and task lists for Plant Care activities (update and assure compliance with greenhouse plant care SOPs)
Monitor and complete all new plant care request forms
Chair regular greenhouse meetings
Work with Plant Care LA's to assure appropriate care of plants on weekend
Identify plants which need special attention (small size, altered flowering, etc.) and adjust protocols as needed
Quality Control of plant care products including planting supplies (e.g. soil, potting/planting materials, etc.)
Maintain inventory and order plant care supplies as needed
Monitor and manage pest populations (pest traps, beneficials) and apply pesticides as needed and oversee our Integrated Pest Management Program
Monitor and adjust environmental controls in greenhouse
Monitor greenhouse equipment and work with Wreckshop to maintain in good working order
Assure that greenhouse stays clean and orderly
Other duties as assigned
Skills:
Technical skills in plant care (specifically cereal crops): knowledgeable in watering, fertilizing, pest control (including integrated pest management), seed care, troubleshooting other problems with plants (physiological stress, disease, pests)
Experience in research greenhouse management and operation of greenhouse environmental controls (Wadsworth Controllers)
Experience with automatic watering and fertilizer systems
Basic computer/database skills: should understand seed tracking and management systems
Should be familiar with regulations for growing transgenic plants, greenhouse building requirements, tracking systems, disposal
Good organizational and communication skills, service-oriented
Interpersonal skills: can interact fluidly with team members and members of other groups
Qualified pesticide applicator, familiar with pesticide regulations
To be able to work after hours, on weekends and holidays
