We are looking for a Group Leader for the Entomology Team. The major role of Entomology Group Leader is to ensure the company has in-house capability to conduct innovative, consistent and timely bioassays against a range of important insects in order to rapidly move bioinsecticidal candidates from discovery to development and then to the market. This role is responsible for managing, designing and conducting lab and plant-based bioassays for new bioinsecticides, overseeing the ongoing microbial screening program and insect rearing. The Entomology Group Leader reports to the VP of Research & Development.
Responsibilities and Duties
Primary responsibilities include:
Design and implement innovative bioassays to evaluate new microbial bioactives against a wide range of economically important insects. Understand and implement the latest technologies for evaluation of treatment efficacy.
Lead, manage and develop an enthusiastic team of entomologists.
Develop a system that ensures availability of high-quality insects for ongoing screening and testing.
Demonstrate current knowledge of organic and conventional pesticides and monitor the emergence of potentially new insecticidal pest targets in agriculture.
Specific responsibilities include:
Design and implement statistically validated plant-based and diet bioassays for testing new microbial broths and plant extracts, experimental formulations, and manufacturing and other samples for Quality Control against a wide range of economically important insects (of several insect orders). Ensure the company has high-quality insects (a range of sucking and chewing insects) for ongoing screening and testing.
Enhance in-house testing capability and enhance our network of university and private cooperators.
Oversee the weekly discovery screening for testing microbial extracts against a range of insects.
Oversee maintenance of insect colonies and ensure there are always high-quality insects available for testing.
Collect, summarize, analyze, disseminate, organize and present results.
Maintain data in an organized, systematic manner on the company server, available for others in the company to easily access.
Supervise three or more scientists, technicians and student interns.
Constantly interact with and update project team leaders, senior management, regulatory staff, and other scientific groups.
Attend professional meetings/events and deliver presentations that will benefit MBI.
Interact with university and extension personnel.
Keep abreast of new technologies and research in the area of microbial and plant-extracted insecticides and bioassays; bring forward new ideas to colleagues and company management.
Qualifications and Characteristics
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in insecticide bioassay and insect rearing in an industrial or high-performance setting. More specifically, this person should have:
A Ph.D. in Entomology and a minimum of 5 years? experience in bioassay and insect rearing.
A minimum of 2 years in an agrichemical, biopesticides or similar industrial setting.
Experience designing, conducting, evaluating and summarizing bioassays on multiple insect species.
Experience rearing or overseeing the rearing of multiple insect species.
Well-established computer skills; good report writing and data management skills.
Ability to multi-task, handle a high volume of tasks, work well under pressure and with short deadlines.
Ability to work in a team environment; good written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
Experience managing a team of scientists and technicians.
Aptitude for understanding business aspects of the Company?s goals, ability to read MBI?s business plan and understand its underlying strategy.
