Head Start Assistant Teacher Brightside Academy

As a professional individual, the classroom Head Start Assistant Teacher works closely with the Head Start Lead Teacher, as well as the Academy Director and the Academy Education Manager to provide and maintain a positive and appropriate educational program that meets the Head Start Performance Standards. The focus of the program is to provide comprehensive education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to the participants. This position is a full time/year round position with Head Start and Academy education support responsibilities.
Essential Duties: Job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
I. Program Quality
Head Start is a child-focused program that involves parents in the process to improve a child's readiness for kindergarten.
Early Intervention services
Social service referrals
Parent education and involvement
Health and nutrition services
A network of supportive service for children with special needs, including Early Intervention services.
Completing 2 home visits per child per year
Monitoring and Maintaining attendance at 85%
Welcoming and working with parent volunteers in the classroom
Developing and participating in a yearlong Kindergarten Transition planning with local schools, parents, and community organizations
Participating in engaging children in health and nutrition activities through family-style meal service
Support and participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation the educational environment and programming of the classroom. This includes but is not limited to:
Maintaining child attendance and educational records/files.
Becoming familiar with and utilizing the company-standardized curriculum and curricular resources in order to prepare, implement, and evaluate daily classroom experiences (indoor/outdoor).
Collaborating with Lead Teacher to complete planning documents on a weekly basis same for assessments and reports.
Collaborating with Lead Teacher to complete environment and materials in accordance with Weekly Planning Forms.
Implementing age-, developmentally-, and culturally-appropriate classroom activities and experiences for the children.
Collaborating with Lead Teacher to complete formal and informal child and classroom assessments and progress reports, per required timeframes.
Providing individualized programming and differentiated instruction necessary for the success of the children within their care.
Providing a family-friendly and focused environment that includes frequent informal communication with caregivers as well as formal tri-yearly conferencing. Additional conferences should be made available upon request.
Welcoming, educating, and working with parent volunteers in the classroom.
Assisting the Lead Teacher in developing and implementing a year-long Transition plan with local schools, parents, and community organizations.
Accompanying the Lead Teacher on two home visits per year.
Assisting the Lead Teacher in engaging children and families in health and nutrition activities through participation in family-style meal service.
During the non-program hours, assists the Managing Lead Teachers and/or the Academy Education Director in program improvements throughout the academy.
Actively participates in and maintains their classroom ?Response to Intervention? process. The Brightside Academy ?Response to Intervention? process works to ensure successful outcomes for all children and families who experience our programs. This includes, but is not limited to:
Actively participates in Brightside Academy as well as field-based professional development opportunities. It is required for classroom Lead Teachers to obtain a minimum of 24-professional development hours (or 8 college credits) a year.
Prepares the Head Start Assistant Teacher to assume the role of Head Start Lead Teacher by providing training while the Assistant Teacher leads selected activities during designated parts of the classroom day.
Academy Support functions:
Adheres to all company policies and procedures.
Actively attends and participates in all Academy staff meetings, and assists where needed.
Motivates classroom colleagues by maintaining a positive attitude and leading by example.
Is willing to work in a team environment; is willing to share ideas and be open to other?s; is flexible and willing to compromise.
Assists in the creation of a positive enjoyable work environment.
The Head Start Assistant Teacher is expected to be on time to work every day and to follow the company dress-code. Always use appropriate language and treat everyone with respect, exhibiting a genuine positive attitude towards all children, families, and Academy colleagues. If anything is felt to be incorrect or inappropriate within the Academy, it is the responsibility of the Head Start Lead Teacher to immediately notify a member of the management team so issues can be addressed and rectified. This includes concerns with staff, families, and children.
The Head Start Assistant Teacher performs additional program duties as assigned by the Head Start Lead Teacher, Academy Director and/or the Academy Educational Manager.
Qualifications/Requirements: The Head Start Assistant Teacher provides classroom support to the Head Start Lead Teacher. The Head Start Lead and Assistant teacher work together to ensure the program's goals, services and resources are designed to foster stable family relationships, enhance children?s physical and emotional well-being, and establish an environment to develop strong cognitive skills.
The transition from preschool to kindergarten imposes diverse developmental challenges that include requiring the children to engage successfully with their peers outside of the family network, adjust to the space of a classroom, and meet the expectations the school setting provides the provisions within the programming of the Head Start Performance Standards. High quality classroom programming must include a triangulated framework of family-centered practices; developmentally, individually, and culturally appropriate practices and intentional teaching; and program support.
A successful Head Start Assistant Teacher must have the following education, experience, and abilities:
A minimum Associates Degree in ECE or Career Lattice 5 on the PA Keys Quality Career Lattice with a minimum of 5 years classroom experience
Preferred education is Bachelors? degree in Early Childhood Education (ECE) or related field (child development, special education, elementary education or human service field) with 30 ECE credits or Career Lattice 6 on the PA Keys Quality Career Lattice with a minimum of 2 years of classroom room experience.
Prior experience teaching in a high quality PreK program (STAR 3, 4, Head Start, PreK Counts), a plus.
Certified in First Aid, CPR, and Mandated Reporting.
Current and approved tuberculosis test results.
Ability to pass a thorough criminal background check and drug screening.
Has working knowledge of state licensing and accreditation systems.
Demonstrated communication skills, including expressive (written and oral) as well as receptive skills.
Ability to use technology such as iPads, and other educational resources.
Demonstrated ability to independently as well as collaboratively make appropriate and rational judgments and decisions, reason effectively, and solve problems.
Ability to effectively read, write and communicate the English language. Bilingualism is a plus.

The Head Start Assistant Teacher must be enthusiastic and energetic as well as nurturing, patient, compassionate.
