The Job
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with engineering and business teams in the selection of inventions for patenting and then draft patent applications as appropriate
- Manage the SpaceX patent portfolio
- Determine freedom to operate
- Negotiate or assist other legal team members in negotiating contracts where intellectual property issues predominate, such as software license
- Assume responsibility for protecting SpaceX's trademarks and a variety of other IP issues
- Tackle a wide range of other legal tasks that will in many cases be unrelated to IP law
- Candidates must have 5-10 years of patent prosecution experience, preferably with an aerospace background
- Candidates must possess excellent academic credentials and strong research, writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
- Candidates must be registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and a member in good standing of at least one state bar
- Proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred skills
- California bar membership is preferred
- Prior in-house experience is desirable
- Familiarity with the allocation of patent rights and data rights under U.S. Government contracts.
