Position Description: Revision3, the leading online special interest video network, is looking for a Junior Web Engineer with a focus on internet-based video applications. The Junior Web Engineer splits their time between optimizing encoding settings and video delivery mechanisms, helping maintain several connected video playback applications, and expanding the public and private APIs for accessing video metadata. Target environments range from web-based and mobile apps, to platform-specific hardware device implementations. This position may also assist with development and QA of non-video website features, as needed.The ideal Junior Web Engineer candidate has working knowledge of several video and audio codecs, and be comfortable testing and setting optimal encoding standards for specific devices. They also have excellent command line skills, in order to automate large processes and leverage existing infrastructure, for delivering high quality web video efficiently in a tight timeframe. This includes extensive use of shell scripting for moving data and calling APIs.
In addition to a main focus on web video encoding and delivery mechanisms, the ideal Junior Web Engineer candidate actively participates in the development and QA of other core web applications with other engineering team members. Previous experience with several current server-side web technologies (NodeJS, PHP5 or Java, Python, etc) and passion for cutting edge frontend web technologies (HTML5, responsive design, full-stack JavaScript) will be very beneficial.
Responsibilities Include but are not limited to:
Implement new HTML5 frontend templates and client-side functionality using JavaScript
Author and deploy shell scripts for automating video and image publication
Assist with maintenance of existing LAMP-based website backend as needed
Communicate encoding processes to video editors and producers, and assist with encoding workflow issues
Perform web and app build QA (including multi-browser or multi-device compatibility testing
Required Skills:
2+ years demonstrated experience with common UNIX utilities and scripting (bash, scp, sftp, python, etc)
2+ years demonstrated experience implementing internet-based applications (NodeJS, PHP5 or Java a big plus)
Demonstrated experience encoding and decoding web-optimized video using multiple codecs (H264, WebM, etc)
Proven mastery of basic CSS concepts, and cross-browser compliant considerations and implementations
Basic understanding of software engineering best practices, code repository use, automation frameworks, etc
In-depth knowledge of current-generation internet application technologies including JQuery, WebSockets, etc
Passion for technology, digital media and gadgets, and internet video
