The Legal Intern is quickly integrated into a small and efficient legal department and plays an important and diverse supporting role. The position provides exposure to a wide variety of assignments which, while requiring creativity and initiative on the part of the Intern, are done with the supervision of highly experienced and supportive attorneys and professionals. The primary focus is on intellectual property however the Legal Intern will be exposed to most legal and many business issues confronting a public biotech company.
Essential Duties:
Perform specific short-term projects related to the goals and mission of the Fluidigm Legal Department.
Work with inventors to draft examples for patent applications.
Search patent, business, and scientific literature and compile and analyze search results.
Assist in strategies for Fluidigm?s patent portfolios.
Investigate freedom to operate for Fluidigm technologies.
Provide technical support for patent interference and litigation proceedings.
Draft progress reports as required by licensing agreements.
Research and calculate royalty obligations.
Provide technical support for decision making processes.
Communicate with Fluidigm employees to compile and update information for Legal Department projects.
Document work performed within the Legal Department and maintain accurate records as required by Legal Department operating procedures.
Interact with and provide services to Legal Department customers as needed.
Support drafting and review of agreements, contracts, policies, and forms.
Support filings of official forms and documents with various governmental agencies.
Assist all members of the Department in performing routine and non-routine duties as required by Department workload.
Minimum Qualifications:
College Degree in technical field.
Ph.D. or graduate student, who has advanced to candidacy in molecular biology, cell biology biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, bioengineering, chemical biology or related scientific field. Interdisciplinary technical experience preferred.
Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English in technical, legal, and business communications.
Ability to appreciate alternative perspectives relating to scientific, legal and business issues.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to excel at performing at unfamiliar tasks quickly.
Significant organizational skills and attention to detail.
