Job Description: Linux System Administrator
The candidate must have a strong background in Linux systems administration, preferably in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux environment. Scripting and automation skills are an integral part of our environment. The ability to maintain, enhance and create tools to help in these areas is required. Daily responsibilities include CentOS and Red Hat AS administration, Apache/Tomcat, Veritas NetBackup, scripting, automation, code elevation and maintaining a 24x7 environment.
Responsibilities Include:
Ensure the availability, scalability and performance of the Linux environment
Support the Development and Quality Assurance environments and teams when needed.
Develop and maintain operational documentation and specifications on system builds, disaster recovery documentation, and other standard operating procedures
Responsible for the identification and resolution of service level problems and the identification and support of mission-critical tasks
Test and implement OS and applications patches as well as new application deployments into the environment.
Coordinate with the Security Administrators and Systems Analysts to improve and maintain the technical standards of the environment
Troubleshoot and fix hardware and software problems as they occur
Troubleshoot and fix networking issues at the system level (subnet, routing, etc.)
Exposure to VMware ESX environments across multiple sites to include Virtual Center, HA, DRS, virtual switch configuration, resource pools and datastores
Backup and recovery of all systems and applications in the environment
This is a high-availability environment and will require after-hours and occasional weekend work to implement patches and/or perform system maintenance
Must have an understanding of shell scripting, Perl, and Python
Willingness to learn new technologies and bring new ideas to the group.
Must be able to work independently as well as functioning in a team environment
Should show good leadership potential, and have good time management skills
Commitment to continual improvement of the technical aspects of applications and operations.
Excellent communication skills, interacting with technical support groups, customer support centers and vendors
Skills Required:
4+ years of hands on experience with building servers, installing and patching Linux operating systems and supporting production applications in a 24x7 environment
Exposure to and understanding of virtualization the enterprise, preferably using VMware ESX
Bachelor?s degree in MIS/Computer Science or related technology field or equivalent experience.
Needs to have a strong Linux background, Red Hat AS/ES and CentOS preferred in a 24x7 environment
Have worked in an environment comprised of multiple web-enabled database applications including experience supporting Apache, Tomcat, and Oracle, as well as standard systems level support to include enterprise monitoring, SNMP, SMTP and DNS
Sound understanding of operational processes coupled with proven business and analytical skills
Ability to manage multiple projects, while ensuring that commitments and timetables are met
Professional and diplomatic communication, verbal and written
Ability to partner with internal stakeholders to design operational solutions
Goal oriented, forward thinker that can provide solutions for complex technical problems
