Placemark Investments is an investment advisory firm registered with the Securities and Exchange
Commission. The company is privately held, with 72 employees located in offices in Dallas, Texas and
Wellesley, Massachusetts.
Placemark develops, implements, and supports wealth solutions, including Unified Managed Account
platforms and retirement solutions for broker/dealers, registered investment advisors, banks, and family
offices. As the separate account industry?s leading independent overlay portfolio manager, Placemark
coordinates multiple investment vehicles such as separately managed accounts, mutual funds, and ETFs
into a single customized portfolio.
Placemark?s core mission is to fundamentally change the way that investment management services are
delivered to clients, fostering a more efficient operating model and delivering more sophisticated
investment strategies to meet a wider variety of client needs. We enable financial advisors, sponsors, and
product providers (managers) to better collaborate in delivering superior investment solutions to their
clients. As a firm, Placemark seeks to foster an entrepreneurial culture focused on integrity, innovation,
respect for employees, and exceeding customers? needs.
Much of the company?s business originates with broker/dealer sponsors for whom Placemark is acting as
the overlay manager in the sponsor?s proprietary UMA program. In addition, in 2010, Placemark
developed and launched UMA Marketplace, an open architecture UMA platform for independent advisors
and managers seeking effective distribution in the independent RIA market. UMA Marketplace is a key
element of Placemark?s growth plans for the next several years. Placemark believes that the retail
investment management industry is in the early stages of a period of significant product innovation.
Efficient and flexible advisor access to these new products will be a key element of customer portfolio
construction. Combined with the continued trend towards advisor independence, Placemark has
concluded that there is a significant opportunity to deliver value by creating the most cost-effective means
for innovative new managers to build highly-productive relationships with independent advisors. UMA
Marketplace is Placemark?s response to this emerging opportunity; linking advisors with managers in a
highly flexible and cost-effective manner.

EXPECTATIONS FOR THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
Placemark Investments is looking for a Systems Engineer to help build the IT Solutions our business runs
upon, both today and into the future. The term ?Systems Engineer? means many things in different
places, often synonymous with Systems Administrator, but not here. If you are looking for that next role
where you are working on projects that let you work across many IT disciplines - the server side, the
network side, the storage side, the scripting side, this is your dream job. No more managing the backup
tapes and no more watching the monitoring system. This role is more like a Technology Consultant who
works internal to the business, which means you need to have the following:
? Ability to comfortably talk with both Technology and non-Technology business managers within the
firm to collect project requirements, coordinate functional testing of new solutions, obtain final
sign-off on deployment, and other aspects necessary to facilitate a successful project roll-out.
? Ability to apply technical skills and experience to research, perform analysis, and arrive at a bestfit technology and/or product that addresses all project requirements, without self-generating
unnecessary technical requirements or allowing the scope of the project to creep beyond the
needs of the original stakeholders.
? Possess a top-flight technical skill set. Optimally, you can work on projects regarding networking,
storage management, Linux servers, and Windows servers. If you were not the team ?Ace? when
you were a SysAdmin, and the go-to person for things the other people on the team could not
quite grok, you probably won?t make the cut. The more ways you can solve problems, and the
more aspects of a solution that you can handle, the more value you have to our team.
? Excel at written communication, clearly and concisely documenting a technical solution you have
implemented. This may include maintenance processes for Systems Administrators or End User
walkthroughs or similar documentation for a less technical audience.
? Experience with maintaining networks, storage, and servers as a Systems Administrator, so you
can craft processes and documentation with their considerations in mind. Here, a Systems
Engineer builds and implements solutions (much like a consultant does) and then hands them off
to the Systems Administration team for management and maintenance. Understanding their
world and what makes it easier or harder for them is an important consideration in every project,
as all maintenance is drag and drag is cost.
? Ability to internalize the fact that your job is to generate business value, not prove your personal
technical merits. You are past the point of being a technology ?fan boy?, or someone always trying
to find a way to use pet technologies for every problem. You don?t possess a compulsion to do
something unnecessarily complex in order to get satisfaction from your work. Simple, effective,
and timely solutions that deliver the value will always impress most.
? Ability to coach and train Systems Administrators on new solutions you are deploying, to
effectively facilitate project hand-off into production.
? Provide escalation assistance to the Systems Administration team on your solutions during critical
situations or business-impacting issues that appear beyond their technical capability to resolve in
a timely fashion.
? Understand that projects you are given, you own, and that here as a Systems Engineer you are
expected to demonstrate excellent, business-oriented judgment about those projects and a
?whatever it takes? approach to that ownership. You take initiative to do what?s necessary to get
the projects rolled-out, keep project velocity high, and demolish or circumvent roadblocks that get
in the way. You need to be a person who recognizes when the needs of the business dictate afterhours work, weekend maintenance, or off-hours testing. When it?s needed, you make it happen.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
? Competitive salary plus annual bonus opportunity
? Comprehensive benefits package including: o Medical, dental and vision insurance
o 3 weeks paid vacation
o 401(k) plan with company match
o Employer paid life insurance, AD&D, and short/long-term disability coverage
o Dependent Care / Healthcare Spending Accounts
o Employee Assistance Program
o Casual dress environment
