THIS JOB HAS EXPIRED Relay Foods seeks a Local Produce Sourcing Associate to join the Merchandising Team at its headquarters office in Charlottesville, VA.
Relay Foods is a certified B-Corporation, with one critical aspect of our stated mission being to support and foster the growth of markets for locally-grown and sustainable produce. The Local Produce Sourcing Associate will be Relay Foods? primary liaison with local growers, building and maintaining long-term partnerships with farmers who can meet our customers? desire for high-quality local produce. This employee will also have responsibility for the local produce catalog, which means ensuring availability of products in accordance with the seasons. This position will report to the Director of Merchandising.
More specifically you will be required to:
Seek out new relationships with growers and foster existing relationships to ensure that Relay Foods will be able to meet the demands of a rapidly growing customer base
Clearly communicate to farmers the value-proposition of partnering with Relay and carefully cultivate relationships with farmers to make sure their experience working with Relay is best-in-class
Work with the Merchandising and Procurement departments to project seasonal demand for local produce and to build a complete offering of local produce items, including offerings like asparagus that may be more difficult to source locally last-minute
Be the primary point of contact with growers, including visiting farms as frequently as necessary to maintain clear, open communication with our farmer-partners
Support Relay?s farmer-partners in their yearly and seasonal planning for crop yield based on Relay?s projected needs
Foster innovative ideas for value-added products utilizing local produce, including weekly planning for the Virginia?s Bounty Basket, seasonal planning with our Prepared Foods Chef, and regular planning with the Produce Manager for re-formatting local foods in our in-house Chop and Wash station
Create a Relay seal of approval or ratings system for growers in our network to provide complete transparency to customers about farmers? growing methods and sustainability
Coordinate with Marketing team to educate Relay Foods customers and employees about local farming and seasonal produce, in written (blog posts) and/or oral presentations (events)
Travel on at least a weekly or bi-weekly basis to various farms in the Mid-Atlantic to maintain relationships and develop new ones
Bachelor?s Degree or equivalent professional experience and training
Extensive knowledge of and existing relationships with growers in the Mid-Atlantic foodshed, preferably focused in and around Charlottesville, Richmond, and the Shenandoah Valley
Farming background strongly preferred, with ability to support farmers in projections and planning for needed crop yield
Customer service background or demonstrable proficiency in cultivating and maintaining strong business partnerships with people of diverse backgrounds
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Detail-oriented, analytical, and a proven problem-solver
Experience working with teams and juggling multiple complex projects successfully
A passion for making local, sustainable food available to a wide audience
