Summary:
The Manager of Test Engineering will lead a department responsible for testing multiple hardware, software and services in the Aircell Business Aviation group, including the Air-to-Ground high speed Internet, Iridium and handset products. This is a working management position and the job role may include leading specific product test efforts, as well as managing the overall department.
Position Description:
Manages, coaches and mentors an engineering team responsible for testing embedded hardware and software aviation telecommunication products and services. Coordinates activities of the department in test strategy, planning, design, development, and execution of tests for products, systems, and services, as well as developing and improving standards and processes for the test discipline.
Requirements Leads test engineering team. Manages personnel, with key responsibilities to include interviewing, hiring, training, mentoring, performance evaluation, prioritization and providing expert guidance.
Provides planning, direction, and coordination for all technical activities while achieving optimum use of staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Coordinates and directs projects using in-house and outsourced resources.
Reviews product requirements for completeness, accuracy and testability and develops an appropriate test strategy to accurately measure product requirements, beginning with the product concept phase.
Directs department activities to develop and implement policies, standards and procedures for the team, and sets technical goals within broad outlines provided by upper management.
Prepares budgets, bids, and contracts, and directs the negotiation of contracts, as needed.
Performs administrative functions such as writing and reviewing reports, providing metrics, approving expenditures, and making decisions about the purchase of materials or services.
Effectively and regularly communicates and collaborates with direct management and project teams
Presents and explains proposals, reports, and findings to internal and external teams and management.
Consults or negotiates with internal and external customers and vendors to prepare project specifications and/or procedures.
Identify opportunities to introduce and implement test automation; Ensures teams have optimized use of automated tools where possible.
Leads iterative test efforts of product deliverables,
Occasional travel to work with vendors and contract developers will be involved, including overseas travel.
Minimum Experience:
10 + years of embedded Software, Firmware , Hardware, and/or System testing experience;
5 + years experience leading product test efforts in industrial, telecommunications, aerospace and/or regulated electronics industries, including hardware, software, environmental and regulatory testing.
3+ years of experience as functional manager of a test or quality assurance group
Experience with automated test environments utilizing open-source tools and scripting languages
Extensive industry experience in wired and wireless data communication, telecommunication and/or satellite communications, including IP, VOIP, and cellular protocols
Experience working within both Iterative (Agile, Scrum ,etc ) and waterfall development models
Team -oriented management style and the ability to lead and coach a multidisciplinary and multicultural team.
Experience working with off-shore development and test teams
Flexibility and a positive attitude towards change in a fast moving environment.
Proven ability to collaborate with diverse groups within and outside the business including other engineering groups, sales, marketing, technical support, manufacturing, quality, and vendors.
Avionics industry, DO-160, DO-254 and DO-178 experience or knowledge a plus;
Mobile platform application testing experience a plus
Audio parameter testing and voice quality analysis a plus
Satellite communication experience a plus
Minimum Education required:
Bachelors degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering; masters degree preferred
