The Company is seeking to fill a new position in the Legal Department of Director of Risk Management at our Brentwood, Tennessee headquarters. The successful candidate will actively participate as a key member of the Legal Department in supporting all facets of the business of the Company as directed by the Chief Legal Officer, but with a primary focus and responsibility for working with the Company?s in-house litigation paralegal, outside litigation counsel, the Company?s insurance broker and underwriters, and the Medical Management of the Company to develop and manage a comprehensive and pro-active risk management program, and to management and coordinate all claims and litigation related to the Company. The position reports to the Company?s Chief Legal Officer.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Review, update and oversee a comprehensive and pro-active Risk Management program for the Company, with a focus on mitigating professional liability in healthcare environments.
Work closely with the Company?s outside counsel and underwriter claims adjusters in managing and facilitating the Company?s obligations in connection with all claims, litigation and other matters involving the Company, any of its facilities or health care providers.
Work with the Company?s Medical Management and outside counsel to assess and advise the Company as to strategy and responses to claims or incidents.
Work with the Company?s affiliated physicians to provide assistance on matters such as responding to legal and regulatory process.
Oversee and maintain the Company?s insurance programs in cooperation with the Company?s insurance brokers and underwriters.
Support the Company in creating, refining and managing fundamental business controls and processes, including risk management policies, protocols and standardized forms.
Provide risk management training to Company staff and affiliated physicians on mitigation of risk in healthcare environments, including direct presentations and development of web based modules.
Coordinate and deploy external training resources as appropriate for individual physicians.
Respond to risk management related events and crisis.
Work collaboratively with the Risk Management departments of the Company?s Hospital clients to identify and address issues, and to respond to risk events.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
JD from an accredited law school with licensure, or ability to obtain licensure, in Tennessee a plus but not required.
Medical training, licensure and experience in a hospital setting a plus but not required.
5 ? 7 years of experience with medical malpractice management or 3 - 5 years of actual defense litigation in a law firm environment.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management, Company executives, physicians, insurance companies, attorneys, regulatory agencies, suppliers, customers and others.
Demonstrated ability to work independently; self-disciplined and highly organized
Demonstrated ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple projects with competing priorities.
Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to accurately assess responses to specific facts in order to mitigate risk and exposure.
Ability to provide practical, creative solutions to difficult problems.
Primarily interested in candidates with strong knowledge of and work experience with hospitals, physicians, physician practices or other health care providers.
Maintains strict confidentiality with regard to protected health information and understands and adheres to Cogent's HIPAA Privacy & Security policies and procedures
