The Medical Coder works under indirect supervision, reviews medical records and assigns the appropriate CPT and ICD-9 code(s) while adhering to compliance published regulations and guidelines.
Audits medical record documentation to identify coding variances; prepares reports of findings.
Trains, instructs, and/or provides educational support via classroom, telephonic and internet based applications to medical providers regarding coding compliance documentation, regulatory provisions, and third party payer requirements.
Interacts with physicians and other patient care providers regarding billing and documentation policies, procedures, and regulations; obtains clarification of conflicting, ambiguous, or non-specific documentation.
Researches, analyzes, and responds to inquiries regarding compliance, inappropriate coding, denials, and billable services.
Interacts with providers and management to review audit findings.
Ensures strict confidentiality of patient and financial records.
Attends coding conferences, workshops, and in-house sessions to receive updated coding information and changes in coding and/or regulations.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience
Coding Certification required (CPC, CPC-H, CCS, CCS-P) within one year of employment
At least 2 year experience coding Evaluation and Management services.
Ability to clearly communicate medical coding information to professional practitioners and/or the general public in a classroom, telephonic and internet application setting.
Knowledge of coding concepts and principles.
Knowledge and understanding of medical coding and billing systems and regulatory requirements.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and policy compliance issues related to medical coding and billing procedures and documentation.
Ability to analyze and solve problems.
Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information.
Ability to adapt, modify and prioritize coding functions as required.
