Assists with the design, development, execution, and maintenance of coding education and support to coding compliance throughout the organization.
Designs, develops, executes, and maintains a comprehensive coding education program to ensure all Coders are appropriately trained on tactical, compliance, and other pertinent aspects of coding and ensure compliance with applicable regulations.
Develops supporting materials and conducts classroom and/or on-the-job training of new and existing Coders.Reviews and analyzes random samplings of medical records from assigned providers for accurate selection of evaluation and management codes and procedures.
Reviews physician work and documentation within the medical record to ensure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, and other payer requirements.
Ensures that billing is maximized and errors are minimized by identifying training opportunities through audit and observation.
Keeps abreast of regulatory or internal process and procedure changes which may affect coding. Implements training and/or education related to such as needed.
Translates data, assigns and sequences diagnostic and procedural codes as needed.
Participates in special projects and completes other duties as assigned.
Expert working knowledge of CPT-4, ICD-9 and HCPCS codes.
Strong understanding of coding and documentation issues facing the healthcare industry.
Confidence and the ability to communicate coding concepts to medical staff and management.
Must be detail oriented with excellent accuracy.
Excellent organizational skills.
Good computer skills using a medical management application.
Possess a strong work ethic and a high level of professionalism.
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Associate?s degree in related field preferred.
Completion of college level courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes and pharmacology highly desirable.
Must be certified through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as one of the following: Registered Health Information Management Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Management Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or Certified Coding Specialist Physician Based (CCS-P)
Must be certified through the American Association of Procedural Coders one of the following: Certified Professional Coder-Hospital (CPC-H) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
5+ years coding experience.
