industry. We are looking for a Microbiologist, based in Luverne, Minnesota. This Microbiologist
will be responsible for tracking the health of fermentation operations by sampling the production
process, using microbiological techniques and outside labs to gather and analyze key data. The
position will work with a team to identify, develop, and execute solutions for quality and
performance improvements on production systems and troubleshoot equipment, procedures, and
? Monitors performance of fermentation and works within a team to troubleshoot,
investigate, recommend and implement corrective action for nonconformance of
fermentations, including infections and failed inoculation.
? Maintains equipment necessary to monitor fermentation performance.
? Conducts sampling of production streams to monitor the fermentation performance.
? Generates daily written reports on the results of monitoring fermentation performance.
? Accurately and precisely preparing and analyzing samples.
? Prepare media, buffers, and reagents.
? Plating and preparing cell counts.
? Bacterial cultures and counts.
? Use proper aseptic and sterile techniques.
? Properly recording and documenting all sample information and resulting data.
? Adhere to all safety policies and procedures.
? Performs other duties as assigned
? Bachelor?s degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry or closely related field required, preferably
with at least 1 year of industry experience in a fermentation facility.
? Specialized knowledge includes aseptic technique, use of laminar flow hoods, use of
autoclaves, serial dilutions, streak plates, membrane filter plating, light microscopy, cell
counting by hemocytometer, gram staining, and culture maintenance.
? Excellent communication and good interpersonal/teamwork skills are required.
? Required to work a shift schedule which may include Saturday and Sunday
? Collaborate with Analytical Chemists for HPLC and GC sample prep, analysis, and data
? Equipment and glassware cleaning, assembly and sterilization of laboratory equipment
? Medium preparation, filtration and/or in situ sterilization
? Equipment maintenance
? Write and maintain Standard Operation Procedures
? Stock lab supplies and order as necessary to ensure adequate supplies
? Excellent computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation skills
? Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
? Analyzing problems and developing solutions to problems
? Self-starter; must be able to work independently with minimal supervision
? Ability to lift 50 pounds
