Gevo, Inc. is an exciting, team-oriented company that is pioneering the advanced green energy industry. We are looking for a Molecular Biologist, based in Englewood, Colorado. The Molecular Biologist will work directly with their team leader to design and to execute molecular engineering manipulations on yeast biocatalysts. This position will also work closely with technicians, chemists, biologists and engineers who may be peers, supervisors and customers in order to complete tasks. These tasks will include characterization of genotypes and phenotypes of engineered strains. The phenotypic characterization includes fermentation performance and biochemical analysis.
Requirements include:
? Bachelors Degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or related field of study;
? 3-5 Years of experience using molecular biology techniques;
? 3-5 Years of experience with bacterial cell cultures and aseptic technique;
? A strong overall background in biotechnological sciences with knowledge of basic microbiological concepts and terminology;
? Actual laboratory research experience beyond the classroom is required (e.g. directed study, work study, part time job, or full time job)
? Demonstrated ability to independently perform basic microbiological techniques such as aseptic technique, microbial culture work, and UV/VIS spectroscopy;
? Demonstrated ability to work under strict timelines;
? Strong organizational skills, with ability to execute multiple parallel projects with low error rate;
? Consistent demonstration of attention to detail with excellent record-keeping skills;
? Ability to prepare and deliver information in a concise, accurate and professionally written format;
? Ability to prepare and present information in an informal setting;
? Ability to work in a team oriented environment;
? Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new concepts and techniques;
? Ability to interpret experimental results to assess success of experiments;
? Ability to analyze and develop solutions to problems with guidance;
? Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office products;
? Self starter, able to identify errors or areas for improvement, provide recommendations and follow through to completion;
? Ability to travel to support the demonstration plant or the commercial plant;
? Ability to work at least 1 weekend day and flexible work hours.
Responsibilities include:
? Basic molecular biology techniques such as DNA purification, DNA gel electrophoresis, restriction digestion, PCR including primer design, plasmid construction, DNA sequence analysis software and bacterial transformation;
? Basic microbiology techniques such as single colony purification, dilution series, plate counts, hemocytometer counts and aseptic technique;
? Basic biochemistry techniques such as protein purification, protein gels and enzyme assays;
? Yeast genetic manipulations including transformation, gene deletions, and integration;
? Yeast culture and shake flask fermentation, including sampling and measuring OD600;
? Accurately preparing reagents of specified pH, ionic strength or concentration;
? Design, set up, execute and document molecular biology experiments. Work with peers and management to define pertinent experiments, develop protocols, collect and analyze resultant data within agreed timelines;
? Routine maintenance and troubleshooting of lab instrumentation;
? Properly recording and documenting all experiments and resulting data;
? Processing data for subsequent review and reporting;
? Communicating results and lab issues in a timely manner with clarity and precision, both verbally and in writing;
? Assist with lab maintenance as necessary (media preparation, autoclaving supplies and waste, dishes).
