Tier 2 Network Engineer (T2NE) performs moves, adds, changes and resolves incidents for client and corporate networks in a 24x7, fast paced, team oriented enterprise level Operations Center. T2NE acts as the escalation point for Service Desk and other Tier 2 resources for networking issues. T2NE participates in a rotating after hours on call P1 response team. Tier 2 Network Technicians deliver world class client service through professional, comprehensive, and timely communication for all Incidents, Requests and Changes; interfacing directly with Layered Tech clients, 3rd party vendors and internal resources to ensure a superior client experience.
T2NE will be responsible for knowing and following all Layeredtech policies, procedures and processes.
T2NE will be responsible for completing company training curriculum as required.
T2NE will be responsible for participation in an on call rotation for after-hours P1 response.
T2NE will be responsible for methodical and successful execution of tickets for client issue resolution.
T2NE will be responsible for creating and/or executing hosting tasks to effect change in the client environments.
T2NE will be responsible for updating documentation to reflect changes in client environments.
T2NE will be responsible for effective client communications via phone and ticket entries.
T2NE will be responsible for providing timely responses, escalations and resolutions in the promotion of rapid restoration of services for all assigned P1 tickets.
T2NE will inform the Tier 2 Manager of all assigned P1 incidents or critical events.
T2NE will inform the Tier 2 Manager of all observed incidents that violate security procedures.
T2NE will consult with the Tier 2 Manager on situations that are not described by current policies.
Follow documented policies, processes and procedures to include run books and interim escalation protocols.
Successful completion of monthly assigned Layeredtech internal training curriculum.
During assigned after-hours on call weeks respond to escalated P1 items within defined Service Level Objectives.
Perform routine network based tasks to diagnose, repair or effect change to devices based off ticket requirements.
Create/perform detailed steps for tasks to be executed that change the clients networking environment.
Craft or update complete and concise documentation following established templates.
Timely and clear communications with clients, internal technology specialists and management.
Rapidly and concisely communicate to management regarding assigned P1 incidents and critical events.
Foster and sustain an environment that fully maintains the Layeredtech compliance guarantee for clients.
Other duties as assigned
Previous enterprise, IT or service provider experience at Tier 2 or above level
Ability to quickly adapt to advancing technologies and procedural changes
Proven incident and problem solving (troubleshooting) skills with an emphasis on a timely resolution
Ability to coordinate and communicate effectively with other technologists and business partners to maintain high service levels in a demanding environment
Ability to work well in team environment
Excellent verbal, written and analytical skills
Advanced understanding of networking equipment functions (firewall, router, switch, load balancer)
Confirmed knowledge of advanced TCP/IP and related technologies (TCP/UDP, DNS, Ping, routes, host files, service ports, VPN, VLAN)
Demonstrable basic understanding of high availability and disaster recovery solutions
Proven ability to perform basic and advanced network maintenance skills, to include one or more of the following:
Viewing log files
Packet capture and analysis of network traffic via common industry tools.
Backup and restore procedures for network devices and appliances.
Validation of network packet flow through firewalls, routers, load balancers and switches.
Modification of network topologies through changes to router, switch, firewall and load balancers.
Validation of network devices and appliances installed services functionality
Adding/Deleting user accounts with permissions for firewalls, switches and load balancers
Adding/Deleting firewall or load balancer rules, permissions and VLANs
Adding/Deleting VPN configurations on network devices and appliances
Proven ability to maintain network topology diagrams down to the port level
Demonstrable understanding of patching commonly installed OS and firmware for networking equipment
Hands on experience with one or more of the following technologies:
IIS / Apache / Tomcat / JBoss
Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, Watchguard network equipment or appliances
Linux based, F5, Netscaler load balancer technologies
NIC Pair bonding
VPN configuration and validation
SSL certificate installation and maintenance within networking devices and appliances
Common packet capture and analysis tools (wireshark, tcpdump, Rivermine, Splunk)
Familiarization with established IT frameworks, guidelines and practices (SAS-70, SSAE 16, ITIL, COBIT, TOGAF)
Technical certifications in areas of expertise (Microsoft Server, Redhat, Network+, Security+, i-Net+)
Associates Degree or equivalent education in related fields / or 5 years? experience in related field
3+ years? experience working in IT Service Provider industry at enterprise level
ITIL Foundation Training / Certification (Certification required for management roles)
Tier 3 Infrastructure Technician, Tier 2 Management
