Operations Engineer 2U, Inc.
What We?re Looking For:The Operations Engineer will be a member of the team responsible for deploying, configuring and monitoring the hosted server infrastructure for 2U?s educational partners, primarily on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform. The Operations Engineer will also work closely with our developers to support the software development life cycle, QA with testing, and with operations on common systems administration tasks.
Our Ideal Candidate:
Has built infrastructure in AWS or other IaaS using API libraries or the command line tools.
Is familiar with Continuous Delivery and Continuous Integration technologies.
Always thinks about how a manual process can be automated and sees that as a boon, not a threat, to job security.
Is very adept with the shell and the Linux environment in general and considers themselves a nuts and bolts admin.
Has written a fair amount of version controlled, readable and maintainable code at some point, with a strong emphasis on web applications.
Is highly proficient with either Apache or nginx web servers, and HTTP in general.
Has worked with a cloud load balancer like Amazon?s Elastic Load Balancer (ELB) or similar, or has set up HAProxy or used nginx as a load balancer, and is generally familiar with HA, redundant, fault-tolerant architectures.
Is very familiar with Linux server security (iptables, owasp, tripwire) and general -nix fundamentals.
Bonus Points:
Strong experience with different monitoring tools - monit, Zabbix and New Relic here, but also whatever you might have used at your old job or what you have researched and tested on your own.
Can show a CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, or similar automated configuration and infrastructure management stack that you have built.
Can provide a link to your Github, Server Fault, Stack Overflow, or other Stack Exchange profile.
Ready to talk about modern operations culture, theories and application of same in the real world.
Other Attributes That Will Help You in This Role:
Ability to work late and be in contact for emergency hours and when necessary to meet challenging deadlines and demanding service level agreements. Escalations only; overnight response duties are delegated to other time zones.
An interest in eliminating Pager Duties with work on continuous delivery, a robust SOA, and fault-tolerance.
An opinion on any/all of the following - Puppet v Chef, Allspaw / Jacob / Debois, Netflix, #MonitoringSucks, Heroku, OpenStack v AWS, Ops v DevOps v NoOps, Riak v Mongo v CouchDB
