ebrary, a ProQuest business, is looking for Network Operations Manager to join their Engineering & IT organization. The Operations Manager candidate will work to extend and operate ebrary's consumer facing products & internal IT system in in-house, co-lo and cloud facilities.
The candidate is a hands-on manager able to contribute both technical direction and direct implementation of functioning in-house, co-lo and cloud environments with a small, agile team. This individual will work with multiple local and remote Development, SQA and Operations teams in the deployment and operation of services. The position requires a background in web application and service operations, experience in building out software and hardware deployments and hosting services in a cloud environment. Communication and support outside of normal business hours is required. The candidate must be a strong verbal and written communicator and be capable of moving forward technical issues to resolution in a fast paced, startup-like environment. The candidate must be self-driven and able to establish processes and best practices from scratch as well as integrating with existing agile methodologies in the overall context of the Product Development Process.
Principle Duties / Responsibilities:
Manage development and operation of in-house, co-lo and cloud platforms for customer facing on-line and mobile applications and IT systems used by ebrary/ProQuest staff.
Work with management and product stakeholders on systems & network architecture specifications based on business and service requirements.
Work with local and remote development and SQA teams to support the delivery, deployment and operation of services. Provide automation tools and monitoring to support a continuous delivery workflow.
Work with local, and possibly remote in future, NOC and operations teams on 24/7 ongoing operation of the in-house, co-lo, and cloud platform environments. Address escalated issues as necessary.
Oversee and contribute to the documentation of the design and implementation of network, storage and server systems.
Desired Skills & Experience
Required Experience / Education:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
At least three years? experience as a manager or lead of a small (3-6 people) operations team.
Data center experience including build out, software and hardware deployments. Experience in 24/7 operations of services. Experience in testing infrastructure.
Management & Operations experience of network, server, and storage systems. Example systems include Cisco, NetApp, Dell, HP, and EMC.
Service oriented qualifications including 24/7 NOC interaction and troubleshooting response experience.
Cloud only hosting experience such as Amazon Web Services, Rackspace, etc.
Experience operating Linux & Windows and Java & .net environments
Automation of SCM, build and deployment activities using tools such as Maven, Puppet, Chef, & Zookeeper.
Implementation of monitoring of services using tools such as Nagios, Zenoss, Cacti, Ganglia etc.
Successful deployment and operation of services in cloud environments (e.g. Amazon or Rackspace). Experience helping scale services to handle large number of users and resulting traffic.
Be able to communicate clearly technical ideas and issues.
Experience in participating in a formal to light weight operations process including Agile Scrum or Kanban.
