Outreach Presenter - Part-Time Contract Role Common Sense Media
THIS JOB HAS EXPIRED
Common Sense Media is the leading independent nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of kids and families by providing the information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in a world of media and technology. We're a talented group of passionate professionals, and if you don?t send us your CV, you?ll kick yourself! We are presently seeking a talented Outreach Presenter. PLEASE NOTE: This position is located in New York, is a part-time contract role paid per assignment for the school year (with down time in the summer), and no relocation assistance is available.
SOME BACKGROUND:
In fall 2011, we launched our Independent School Outreach Program. The response and demand has exceeded our expectations -- which we're absolutely thrilled about! So we're looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic presenter to help us fulfill the ongoing demand for faculty trainings on our Digital Literacy and Citizenship Curriculum, as well as conduct parent presentations on ?Raising Kids in a Digital World.? This role plays a vital part of Common Sense Media?s Independent School Outreach Program, which offers the opportunity to help a school community create a shared vocabulary amongst educators, parents, and students in responsibly navigating our 24/7 media world. Our K-12 curriculum is designed to equip students with the skills to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly in our ever-changing digital world. Likewise, our parent presentations provide an overview of today?s digital media landscape -- what?s new about it and how it has influenced the way kids learn, socialize, and play -- for better and for worse. Topics covered include social networking sites, sexting, cyberbullying, and more.
WHAT YOU?LL DO:
As faculty trainings and parent presentations are scheduled, you'll need to commit approximately 6-10 hours per workshop for prep, presentation, and follow-up/evaluation. In general, faculty trainings are held during the day, while parent presentations alternate between mornings and evenings. Workshops are held at various independent schools throughout New York City, primarily in Manhattan. A flexible schedule is necessary, and you must have experience in public speaking or presenting material in a professional setting. Familiarity with the New York private school community is a real plus! Please have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to collaborate with multiple constituents. Part of your work will be collaborating with the Development Assistant to coordinate logistics, identify and meet the schools' needs, and ensure that all program collateral is updated and prepped on-site for each presentation. You?ll also attend periodic staff training and post-mortem sessions in person or by phone.
All workshops will be organized and arranged by a Common Sense staff member; the successful candidate will receive training on the workshop content in order to become comfortable with the material. Each workshop is adapted to meet the needs of the school receiving the presentation. The presenter is responsible for promoting Common Sense Media?s advocacy and cultivation efforts by collecting contact data at each workshop to allow the New York office to follow up and maintain relationships with workshop attendees. This role reports to the New York Regional Director and works closely with the development and education teams.
WHAT WE NEED TO SEE ON YOUR RESUME (REALLY):
Strong professional development and/or teacher coaching experience
Strong presentation skills -- i.e. you are truly at ease speaking in front of diverse audiences
Ability to work independently or with minimal oversight
Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office suite)
Experience working in the independent school community (must have)
Full-time teaching experience (nice to have)
THE X FACTOR:
You have a passion for Common Sense Media?s mission
You have a truly flexible schedule
You embody grace under pressure
You?re pretty darn nice to be around
You take initiative, and you are enthusiastic by nature
